Vent on filler neck
I have a 1970 gto and putting in new gas tank. The old one has a vent on filler neck but the new one doesn't, should I add vent to filler neck or use a vented gas cap instead. Thanks

Use a vented cap since it will never get get clogged off with age like the hose can.

Vented gas caps let air in but does not let air out.Put the vent in the neck.Tom

I just simply added the vent tubes to the new tank on my 70 bird. Not that hard to solder some tubes in place and connect the hose. If I remember right it was a very short run from the filler neck straight down to the tank body.

My 70 also had the vent top front, passenger side I believe. Small length of hose attached to the underbody with some fiber material jammed/stapled in the end. I think my 69 does as well but cannot recall.
Wouldn’t that allow the tank to vent to the outside if the filler neck one was removed/not there? Or does each vent serve a specific purpose? I know the filler neck one loops into trunk area and then back out.

The vent prevents suction that will prevent fuel delivery to the carb. With environmental concerns developing the vents went away and the vented caps where instituted by the government.

I bought a new 1970 firebird tank for my 72 since i eliminated the vent system & box behind the rear seat, it is an unvented tank.
Since I wasnt using the vapor return port on the pickup I just used a tanksinc vent with the check ball in it ran up higher than the tank near the trunk floor along with a normal vented cap... no pressure or vacuum in the tank & very little smell when it sits in the garage. I live in a state with no emission testing so proper vents didnt really matter. |

My 69 A body tank had 2 vents. One on the filler neck and another larger one on the top, passenger side corner. When I soldered in a 1/2" steel pickup tube I used the larger 1/2" vent for a return and the only vent was the one in the neck.
I worked just fine. Recently took the tank out and am putting in a 5 gallon fuel cell. More work than I thought. |
