I came accross a transmission for sale. The guy says it came out of a 1969 RAIV GTO. How do identify this transmission?

There are two sets of numbers stamp into the case. One number appears to be a VIN number. How do I decode these numbers?

If I recall, the RAIV only came with the M21. What is the difference between the M20, M21 and M22?

Thanks

A close ratio Muncie used in '69 GTO will have a "660" case & will have a date code which starts with a P, next number will be model year 9, next will be a letter for the month

A=Jan
B=Feb
C=March
D=April
E=May
H=June
K=July
M=Aug
P=Sept
R=Oct
S=Nov
T=Dec

Next, there will be two numbers, the day of the month asm

Lastly, there will be a letter

A=M20
B=M21 (close ratio)
C=M22 (hd close ratio, not used in '69 Pontiac application)

An example would be:

PB22 B
Muncie '69 Feb 22 M21

A VIN will often be stamped in the case, location varies, often on the top mid plate.

The Turbo 400 two letter id tag code would be PQ for a '69 Ram Air equipped vehicle. This code of T400 could be from either RAIII or RA4 in '69. There will be a partial VIN # stamped in the drivers side pan rail edge. Sometimes this VIN will be legible & due to it having the plant code before the last 6 digits of the VIN, one can decipher if out of A-body or F-body.

To answer part of your question you asked about the M20,21,22. If my memory is correct the M-20 will have a 2.52 1st gear, M-21 has a 2.20 1st gear. I do not remember the M22.

NEP, If I remember correctly the 20 is a wide ratio, the 21 and 22 are the same close ratio. The 22 has straight cut gears the 21 has heilical (sp?) cut gears.

The RAIV's only came with the close ratio tranny , because you could only get them with 3.90 or 4.33 rear gears.

So the tranny should be a M21.

OPH, Is there a way to decode TH400's? I am intrested in finding the year For example: I have 1 TH400 That I took out of a 455/TH400 '76 GrandPrix, its "code" is: 79 OD. I thought the 1st numbers were the year?? Is this right? I also have what I thought was a older TH400 and its coded: 76 AC
thanks in advance, Guy

I'm not OPH, but from what I understand,the last 2 digits of the year then the code for the tranny.

So the 1st would be a 79 tranny for a Olds,looks like 403 in an 88.

The last would be a 1976 but I don't show an 'A'.
Could it be CA?

B's for Buick
C's for Chevy
P's for Pontiac
O's for Olds

76 AC = 1976 Seville

79 OD = 1979 Olds 98 403 (2.41 & 2.56 axle)

Let's go racing!

TTS, I went through my Chilton And Motor Books on info for Muncie, Could not find what I info. wanted, Went to my catalogs and in Classic Industries it shows M-20 As 2.52 and the M-21 as 2.20...it covers 67'-74' F/B on PG 377 of 2000 catalog . Guess book could be wrong or F/B and GTO were Different? As I said I went off memory, I have owned Birds not GTO's.....
