Default No door handles

Is it legal to race a car without door handles? I thought it wasn't, but I saw at least three at Norwalk this weekend.

When i first built my car, i shaved the handles, but after going to the track a couple times, they told me i need handles outside, just incase they need to get in...as for if it is legal in NHRA/IHRA i'm not sure. But my local track implies that it is. Billy

Some race cars have only inside handles, up near the window, with a circle cut out of the Lexan windows to allow someone outside to reach through the window to open the door. That may have been what you saw.

The particular one I'm thinking of was a 64 or 65 gto, I don't remember which. It was black with all the chrome blacked out. I don't remember whether there was a hole in the window or not. By that logic it would be legal to race a car with no handles on the outside as long as the window is down, is that correct?

Once at the starting line and going down the track, a door car must have the window up at all times regardless of where the door handle is. (NHRA) ie: no waving to your friends or shooting bottle rockets at your opponent.

No outside door handle requires a hole in the lexan so it can be opened by hand from the outside by emergency workers (NHRA)

Is it different for IHRA? I found a picture of the car in question, and there is no hole in the window. Just trying to get this figured out.

No door handles is OK, but think what your risking doing that.

No rule, I can find, that makes you cut a hole in the lexan, if you run no door handles on the outside. But its a good thing to have, on a car that races.

OK. I was just curious because I thought it was against the rules, but I saw some cars doing it, so it made me wonder.
