Ok all.
I'd really appreciate your feedback on what I'm planning on doing to my 428.
I'll try and list all the specs., and I would appreciate your thoughts.
Stock bore.
stock stroke
Stock compression.
Pontiac 7K3 heads.
Hedman headers
Edelbrock Performer intake.
Holley 650. cfm dual pump/ dual feed carb.
Comp Cams xtreme energy cam
Duration @.050 int. 250 ext. 256
Lift int. .519 ext. .524
The muncie m21 trans.
rear end ratio of 3:43
My intention is to have a car that can be driven everyday, but still have respectible sound and performance.
I'd like the motor to have a noticible lope from the cam., but under the same time I don't want to "over-cam" the car.
have any of you used this cam?

Marty, You will have to figure out a way to support the headers better. The 7k3 heads don't have bolt holes on the outter edges. It can be made to work with a little swareing.

Pontiac 7K3 heads.

If you use these heads take them to a machine shop and have holes drilled and tapped for your headers, I think this is madatory to prevent leaky headers especially in a street car

Hedman headers

Hooker, Headman or what ever I would use 1-3/4 primarie tube size

Edelbrock Performer intake.

OK

Holley 650. cfm dual pump/ dual feed carb.
Comp Cams xtreme energy cam

I would use a 750 double pumper or a 750 Q-jet for better mileage

Duration @.050 int. 250 ext. 256
Lift int. .519 ext. .524

This cam will give you more than a lope and it is not a practical cam for a driver. Comp does make good cams. I would use a smaller grind unless you have ported heads and are going for all out performance throwing driveabilty and gas mileage to the wind. For unported heads I would use a 041 factory cam, better yet a solid lifter cam of simular duration of the 041 with 1.65 rockers. For a daily driver I wouldn't go bigger than that

The muncie m21 trans.

Go with an automatic trans and save your self a bunch of trouble

rear end ratio of 3:43

nice street/strip gears for a 428 with an automatic trans, better with a 3.73 with a 4 speed

My intention is to have a car that can be driven everyday, but still have respectible sound and performance.

The cam is way too big to drive everyday and it won't pass smog either

There all good parts, I just wouldn't use any of them together. You asked.

Tapping the heads isn't a big deal, since I already had to do that on my 350 in the car now.
I really appreciate the feedback about the cam, I want the car to have a "lope" but I don't want it to be so bad that I can't drive it.
At present I'm running a cam in my 350 that has a duration of 224 degrees int. and 234 degrees ext.
and it's fairly mild, but works really well.
I'm also running big block chev stamped steel 1.7 rockers in the 350.
Surprisingly, there hasn't been any sort of push rod bind, So since they're still relatively new.
I'm thinking about using them in the 428

One nice thing I forgot to mention about here in Oregon.
Early non unleaded fuel mandatory cars, don't have any smog regulations

Marty,

what pistons will you be using. Since you specify a stock bore, I'm assuming you'll be using the original pistons, or original-type replacements?

If that's so, then your compression will be about 8.2:1 with those heads. That cam you mentioned is wayyyy too big for stock heads with 8.2:1 compression. Something like the cam in your 350 would be a better choice. If you want idle lope, chose a relatively narrow lobe separation, say 110 or smaller. If it idles too smoothly for you, just lean out the fuel mixture...

I believe Keith Black makes pistons for the 428 that don't have the dish in them and would give you higher compression with those heads, say close to 9:1. I'm not sure of that though, so check with KB to see.
