My 76 Trans am is approx 4000 lbs and my Wife's 68 Firebird is around 3700 lbs. I was referring to my car in the post. I have an IA2 in the firebird now.

Just got the shipment from Butler, Torker II was not in stock anywhere, and had a projected delivery time "maybe" in august this year, so i went with a butler low profile singleplain.
I have been looking at the parts in awe for about a day port alignment with gasket in place looks just awsome (just 1 side of the intake bolted up with outer bolts hand tigth) to check portalignment, and as far as i can see it looks awsome. Now to tearing out the engine and start the process.

Well this took a hot minute, but finally the engine is out. Cam and lifters look good exept for 1 lifter that is totaly destroyed.
It is so bad that the lifter is mushromed at the bottom and can not be pulled out of the lifterbore from the top, The lobe is also wiped out. I had been running a pretty high closed spring pressure for a flat tappet 140 Lbs closed. guess it finally caught up with me after 8 years. Tomorrow begins the teardown , and measuring for new pushrods. so i can get them on order and on their way over the atlantic.

Check the fit of that lifter bore with another lifter in there.

Just back from the shop now, got the cam out and the lifters, new johnson rollerlifter fits snug and smooth in all bores.
Heads are off, and timingcover is off, mocked up the new cam and timing set, trying my hand at degreeing in the cam. a Nice suprise was that the pistons are 0.001 down the hole, virtually Zero decked. The old cam i pulled out was a EDL-7157.

Mocked up heads on old headgasket and set in a pair of lifters. i used my old pushrod 9.450 on the exhaust and an adjustable pushrod on the intake set to 9.133
The exhaust is narrow, but off center, the intake is centerd but wide . Now the exact same setup, but with comp cam lashcaps, should add 0.20 to the valvetip

Well. startup did not go as planned. i am going to be honest even if it makes me sound like a bonehead.
when we tried to start it, it was turning over and backfiring trough exhaust, so we checked fuel, spark, and spark timing. all was spot on. We scratched our heads. then trying turning it over by hand. when we came up on tdc the valves where not closed... we turned it another 360 crank degrees and valves where not closed there either. So valve event timing must have been of. i degreed in the cam 3 times to absolutley sure it matched the camcard. but i had an issue with 0 endplay on the new cam. I had to order a new thinner camplate from nitemare, a 0.118 pro plate. Since i live in eurpoe this takes about 14 days. In the meantime i flipped the engine upside down on the engine stand, and staring working on oilpump, and a new viton BOP 2-pice rear mainseal. Eventually the the camplate came in i pulled of the timingset , set it aside, mounted the new plate and checked endplay, it was spot on. i must have put the timingset 180 degrees off with the engine upside down. To my somewhat defence i have been working 8 hours on my dayjob, when that ends i drive home, do not shut the car off i run in change to work clothes and drive straigth to the shop, sometimes not eating for 10 hours, pulling 10-14 hour days, at the end i am so whoozey i can't think straigth. So when we pulled the timing cover back up we found this: timing marks lined up, but keyway about 180 degrees off. i was nervous i had bendt the valves. so i removed no.1 sparkplug put a boroscope in and turned the engine 2x times over and we could not even see the valve anywhere close to the piston near tdc. Everything is now corrected. put back together, and it fired up, sounds real good. But i can not drive it out of the shop yet beacuse the shipping company have put about 30-40 pallets just inside the loadingbay gate. As a result of me burning the candle in both ends for about 1 1/2 month i have come down with the flu and are taking the weekend off, but in the end i am relived nothing was damaged or broken.
