Gauge cluster ground?
I have been working on troubleshooting my oil pressure gauge, and came across a ground issue that contradicts everything I have read.
It has always been said that you must have that metal bar between the cluster and the light switch for the ground. However, the light switch is not grounded. It is mounted to plastic parts of the dash. I added a ground to the back of the cluster. The lightswitch is now grounded, but only when the cluster is installed. |

I think the headlight switch ground is for when you manually turn on the dome light.
And cluster ground is in the harmonica connector. Clay |

That makes more sense.
I have checked all the wiring...no shorts, and good continuinty...so I guess it the actual gauge as the circuit board and the sender have been replaced. All I can find is replacement gauges for up to 1978. Does anyone know if these work for a 1981? |

Harmonica connector Ha!
68 Cluster certainly needs GND'd so i put a copper strap to the Lighter. Dash metal GND needs an intentional path to the Alternator case, so i put a firewall GND wire to the engine harness path to the alternator (a chummy copper wire with GM crimped Lug to rear case. I think the GEN lamp may glow dimly (with a good Alternator) if there is a Cluster GND issue. |
