Default Removing overspray from whole car

One of the reasons that our LeMans is virtually rust free, is that it spent 20 years in a Colorado body shop. The downside is that it has a good layer of overspray because it was not covered. It’s got dust in it as well. It’s not that it’s thick, but it is old and hard. I tried the clay bar, that helped a little. I polished it a little, but I’m not going crazy at this point. It appears that there is a decent old single stage repaint under there. The whole car is a dog in need of a repaint but I’m trying to get it a little more presentable. You can see the shadowing of years of overspray on the hood. That was after a good cleaning. I’d rather wipe it off than try to polish it off and take a bunch of good paint with it.

What clay bar did you use? Most of the stuff you get at the local parts store is kind of a dummy technique with compounds not abrasive enough to do any damage.

I'd try a 3m clay bar. It's quite a bit more expensive, but it works pretty well. Years ago when I was working for my father at his aircraft repair facility we had a newly painted C182 get some fairly extreme over-spray after another aircraft had been painted near by. The 3m bar was really knew at the time and worked wonders on the single stage paint applied to the C182.

You've got enough overspray that you'll likely need several goes with the putty. I'd wash the entire car with Dawn to remove any oils, then go panel by panel with the professional grade clay bar. Barring that you'll likely need a cut and buff to clear it up.

Could try wet sanding with 2000 paper.

If it was clear coat, I'd say use reducer, as that will cut through the overspray and not damage the finish. I'm not sure about single stage though. Others might know.

I am reminded of the high end GTO show car in the shop to have the inside of the trunk re sprayed. The story as I heard it was that the car was well prepped & masked.
Well, the spray booth drew air thorough the interior.
The unfortunate result was a 5 figure cleanup!

I guess that I will try the 3M clay bar. I watched a couple reviews on youtube and they say that the store-bought stuff is junk.

Seems like a lot of work if you can just put reducer on a rag and wipe it off.
