Performance transmission TH400
Hi: I'm wondering about pressure to the transmission cooler and cooler lines.
When using an after market valve body, the spring in the pump is increased to supply more pressure in the tranny, say 200 psi. Does anyone know what the pressure in the Transmission cooler is at? Thanks

Pressure is created by resistance to flow. Higher pressure will increase flow some but you shouldn't see a sharp pressure rise unless there is a restriction in that part of the system someplace, which there shouldn't be........IMHO......

Thanks Cliff. I had it stuck in my head that it would be the same as what the pump is putting out. But then realized it just flows back into the pan.

Cooling line pressure is on the order of 30PSI to 45 PSI; less than Converter PSI with the flow restriction from exiting thru the Front Pump "restriction".
I think. |

Ya makes more sense. Nowhere near what the pump puts out. I want to upgrade my Transmission cooler and notice some coolers have pressure ratings and some have none.. got me thinking.

I've never checked cooling line pressure but it just free-flows and folks use rubber hose and clamps all the time to add external coolers and such. Since it's now blowing out low pressure hose I suspect it's not very high.......

I have since found some literature that says it can run 25 to 50 psi. It also says one line is lube and other line converter return. More comfortable with those pressures on the cooler and lines. Thanks guys.

Yep, one of the first things they teach you in school for hydraulics right after the fact that the energy transfer is possible based on the fact that liquid (hydraulic fluid) is basically not compressible. Good thing, nearly ALL of our Pontiac powered auto trans cars are fluid drive (no mechanical connection inside the torque converter) unless you have an auto trans with a TCC and lock it up during the run..........
