Default Comp replacement Lifter is different??

So I had to order a replacement 857 lifter for a collapsed one, The one they sent looks totally different than the one it is replacing. I called comp cams and talked to tech support and they said it was an updated version and was a direct replacement for my bad one. It looks way different, oil hole is in a lightly different location and the body of the new one is slightly taller. Anybody know if I am going to have an issue if I replace just this single pair. Less than 800 miles on this Motor I sure dont want to have to buy a whole new set of lifters. The set on the left is the new one.

Default Pushrod

I would certainly check the height of each lifter from the roller to the pushrod plunger. If they vary much from the original lifter set then you may have to get a different length pushrod for those two valves.

The one on the right is a lifter made by Johnson which Comp use to carry. Get a hold of Johnson and tell them what you have.

Gary, Thanks for the heads up, I measured the distance from the roller to the plunger on both and they are within a few thousands so I should be ok. Chuck thanks for the link to Johnsons site. The bad set is no doubt manufactured by them. It is identical. The crazy thing is that Johnson actually gives their customers a lifetime warranty if you purchase from them. Comp only gives you 1 year. Makes me wonder if they were buying the rejects. After talking to comp several times I think I will use another lifter on future projects.

That is correct Comp used to buy from Johnson a while back but no longer does, too bad as the Johnson lifters are much better than what Comp sells now days.

Johnson is a large manufacturer and they don't sell direct to the public. Even small distributors have to buy from a large distributor and can't buy directly from Johnson.

Johnson makes three different hyd roller lifters for Pontiac. A standard travel, a race version and a race short travel.

I believe that Johnson make the best hydraulic roller lifter for a Pontiac in the business, and the are made in the USA.

I have the 857 S lifters in my motor as well, with no issues. But I have read that there was a lot of issues with the standard 857.

Send all the lifters back and get a full set. Pitch a fit with Comp until they send you all of them. Make the argument that if it's an 'upgraded' version, you don't want this to happen again in another 500 miles. And then again in another 500.

Then check pushrod lengths/geometry, etc.

I agree with HWY, there is a definate difference in design and there is no way I'd have a mismatched set of lifters in any of my engines. I'd either stick with the type you have and replace one (which doesn't sound reassuring given the track record) or replace the entire lot.
