Default 71 GT-37 The Boss Shifting Issues at the Strip

Chris

The drawing shows the mods needed to fix your piss poor shifting habit at the track; may God have pity on your driving.

I can either imagine Mig welding a factory piece and cutting the new lines or CNC to correct the obvious GM blunder.

Or leave it in "D" and let it shift itself?

OK, after looking at this I can do it! I can take two and make one.

I just need donations of this little piece; I have one and I need one more to make Chris a proto type.

If it works out I'll make more for anyone willing to come up with the two donor pieces.

Um thanks, I think.

So you need one that has the reverse teeth on the left side? or just smooth like you show with a neutral lock out?

So would that shift with the shifter pushed away from me or pulling towards me?

There is no way that I can see to make it idiot proof like the Hurst Dual Gate; but here is what you would have.

One two second would be as the lever lays one move with noway to go past second as long as you don't pull it toward you.

Second to Third would need a littel pull and would then stop at third. As long as you don't pull it all the way, you would not hit neutral.

Now that is as drawn. Personally I would have no issue with this shifting method; but it's not idiot proof.

Let me stew on the second to third and see if I can make it idiot proof. If I had a CNC machine I think so; just modifying the stock piece would be a bit more difficult.

The only shifter that would work on the floor with the bench seat would be the manual. I don't think that will fix my traction problem though - but definitely helps with the cool factor.

I've got an M-22 I could use & I could grab all the rest of the stuff off one of your parts cars when I come out in September.

Bring that car back to Tulsa and I'll give it work out without much trouble

I really think this piece can be modified and made to help you; let me at least try. I showed Gary tonight when he had to come by; I don't think I convinced him

Chris,
I used to drive my 71 LeMans like a manual (complete with air breather turned upside down so I could hear my 350 sucking air throught the 2-bbl). I can't remember how I shifited it now but seems like you could go straight from low to second to drive without pulling the shifter towards you and you had to pull it toward you to go to reverse and park. Seems like I used to just keep pressure on the shifter pushing it away from me to keep from getting into neutral. If you put a big enough rubber band or bungee cord from the shifter to an anchor on the dash that would stop you from pulling it towrds you would that be a way of accomplishing the same thing?

BJ

BJ, it will shift fine from 1st to 2nd to drive when pushed away from you - only problem is it will also go into neutral - which if my right foot is trying to put a hole in the floor could be a problem.

I would think, if you get tension on shifter by pushing it away from you and pushing up, it should hit the detent that Steve, shows.
Then to go to 3rd, you need to relax the outward pressure then push outward and up again.
With the out ward pressure the shifter should hit the detent to keep it from going further.
Once the pressure is off, it 'raises' and lets it go to any position that it's pushed, up or down.
( normally you need to pull the shifter toward you to get it over the high spot on the plate to go to a different gear)

I don't see why the plate shouldn't work Steve.

Don't take time away from Shay's project but if you want to take a whack at it - sure.

Or wait until I get down there, show me how to take the column apart and we can figure it out from there. Racing season for me is pretty well over for 2012 unless Jeremy comes up with a T&T day up at Lebanon Valley - so there's no rush.

I have a CNC machine, Is there 2 bent tabs on there? Hard to tell from the picture. If your not in a rush I could make a 3D model and then try different profiles to see how they work.

Yes, there are three bent tabs. I think it will be far easier just to Mig or Tig if needed little chuncks and grind and polish to the T. The bent tabs wouldn't be impossible after cutting the main piece in the CNC but it sure complicates things.

Chris, I need one more plate to make one. Can you either send me the plate or your spare column?

Hey Steve, will your shifter mods make it possible for him to do a decent burnout?!

One that looks like this- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAoLH3afz60

Well technically I would hold the car still a few more seconds into a tire warm up before rolling up.

There is only one way to drive the car right or do a burnout right; and that is to treat the thing like a tattered dog, you beat the **** out of it until it goes beyond the limits it sets for itself.
