Mid 80's Wheels on 2nd Gen
I photoshopped these pics.
Does anyone have actual pics of mid 80's 16x8 wheels on a 2nd gen Trans Am?

heres a few of my 78 with GTA wheels. they look & fit very good & give a little better cornering performance vs 15" tires. i replaced them with the 15" WS6 snoflakes after a reapint though for a more correct look.

The only problem is that the GTA wheels are front and rear specific.
I quite like the third gen 16" wheels, and have dabbled with the idea of modifying my '91 Grand Am to use RWD brakes ect and the Pontiac deep dish directional wheels similar to those photoshopped on the second picture of the yellow TA.

yes GTA wheels are front/rear specific... but they look good with the right combo of 4. the standard 3rd gen snowflakes look good too.

Did you go with 4 fronts? Do you know if the 3rd gen rears will rub?

When we first ran 16's on my wife's lowered '72 we had 225/50/16's on the front and 245/50/16's on the rear. The next set of tires were 215/55/16's on the front and 255/55/16's on the rear. I wasn't running 3rd gen wheels, but IIRC those that did put the fronts on the rear and the rears on the front for proper fitment on a second gen. |

Stock, these came with 225-70-15's which are 27.4" tall. Am I missing something? Currently on my 76, the previous owner put 215-70-15's, which are horrible and look undersized. This is why I am going through the upgrade.

you are correct that stock size 225/70/15 is 27.4", a 27.1" tire should fit without any problems, even if its 16" wheel. not sure why champ said they wont fit... the 235/60/16 is only .4" wider than a 225/70/15 but that shouldnt matter either since people run 255/60/15 all the time that are the same basic height at 27" & are 10" wide, .7" wider than a 225/70/15. i know of some guys that run a 275/60/15 on all 4 corners that are 28" tall, looks kinda stupid on the front but they fit on a non lowered car & only rub on full lock of the steering. if your car isnt too terribly lowered or sagging original springs a 235/60/16 should fit with ease. |

I ran 255-50-16s on my 78 TA fronts on the front rears on the rear no issue. OEM/Classic does make new replacements if you want to use zero offset "fronts" all around. Swapping to them vs the old 255-60-15s autocrossing was night and day! Car was fairly lowered.
305-50-16s would not fit on the rear with the "rear" offset had to use "fronts".

Those wheels look good on these cars, I’m tired of snowflakes and won’t run them on mine, I’m looking for same rims in black.

When I autocrossed it I found a cheap IROC Z wheels and used four "fronts" with 23.5x9 road race slicks. Not as nice looking but cheaper and easier to find back then.

255/60 front & 275/60 rear, no rubbing issues at all & the front is about 2" lower than stock. |

80's Wheels Installed
So I went through with it. I restored a set I got off of eBay. Put 235-60-16's on.
