OK..Most people laugh at me when i ask this question!
I have a 67 Lemans Convertible. I have a 389 64 Eng in it.
It has a two speed automatic tranny. Runs great..very fast..BUT
No matter what I do from a standing start..It will not burn
rubber. I know there are bigger problems in the world..but i
would enjoy being able to for those times and places that it is
actually encouraged!!!.Like some shows as you leave!! I usually
hope for a wet spot or sand!! I have a mid range cam in it also
with a Carter 4bbl. I can get a chirp from about 50 when I hit
it down..but not from a standing stop.
OK,,So would changing gears help.or a different tranny?...ANY suggestions would be appreciated..
Or old bald tires?..What does anyone suggest to help me go
through this mid life burnning rubber phase!!.

Thanks....

The fastest way to have impressive burnouts... Buy an aftermarket windshield washer pump and route the hose to the rear wheels and with a push of a button.... instant smoke! Enough to make you a HappyMan!! LOL!

Even faster way without all the water mess. Install a line lock. Whenever you want to light the tires up just push the button and lockup the front brakes. Step on the gas and immediately release the button. Makes it look like you have 500 hp. Hahaha. TM

Grumpy,

Most people are more interested in how to hook up rather than how to spin the tires but none the less I understand where your coming from here. Your dealing with three problems preventing you from getting out of the hole quick. If you have the factory torque converter and rear gears especially. First off that two speed transmission has a very steep first gear, that coupled with a stock converter and a LeMans that came with a two speed trans will have very numerically low rear gears. Your 389 needs some RPM to get in the power band so I recommend getting a TH-400 trans for starters. The TH-400 is a bolt in you just need to move the cross member back a bit, the holes should already be there. You will need to change your drive shaft but any 64-72 GM A-body that came with a long shaft TH-400 trans should be a good donor for a drive shaft. If your 389 is in good health and in good tune with the trans change you will feel the difference and will burn some rubber. Secondly a change in the rear to 3.23:1 or 3.55:1 rear gears will make a big difference also. Even with a posi unit the gear change and trans change will make a big difference coming off the line and be able to lay down some good rubber. Depending on your level of performance and vehicle use an aftermarket higher stall torque converter will yank you off the line faster also. I would do the trans first, then gears, then converter if you wish. If you change the gears get an Auburn posi unit while your at it or you will be posting again on how to hook up. Good luck.

Grumpy,
Having information on the health of your motor will help us. If the engine has lots of miles and is tired. Burnouts are not going to happen. If the lemans has Highway gears it will also make it harder. My 63 wagon would smoke the Tire. It had over 300,000 miles on it! However, the engine had great compression and was still healthy.
This car had 2:93 gears. You need to do a complete tuneup including a compression check. Make sure the vacuum advance is working.
