Default Stange sound from electric vehicles while in reverse?

For a while now, I've been hearing this strange sound in my neighborhood. Kind of like holding a piece of metal against a spinning metal wheel. Hard to describe. Anyways, after hearing it the other day, I decided to investigate it and see what the cause was. Well, it was one of my neighbors backing their new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid out if their driveway. I've come to be familiar with it, and now I know every time they are backing the vehicle up. It's a very industrial sound and it does not sound like it was created to let people know that the vehicle is backing. Is it a separate motor to back the vehicle up? I'm curious as to what Toyota did to put the car in reverse.
