Took my 67 to a garage who I've used many times and told them to rebuild my motor and trans. Got it back and was told there is a really small oil leak, was told drive it and the drip should stop after the motor has a few miles on it. If it doesn't stop, we will have to pull the engine and fix. Have 2 questions, is this normal and if motor has to be pulled, should I have to pay for that? Thanks People.

As the resident dummy here no its doesn't sound right. I would not want to pay as i bet they will want you to do if it has to come out again. where is the leak? what kind of rebuild?

Complete rebuild of original 400. The drip slows each time it's driven, so far about 100 miles. The leak is the rear main seal. thank you.

Very common pontiac problem and tons of threads about it here. You are going to be in a fight to get them to pull the motor to fix it.

I wouldn't pay until the problem is fixed. I'm sure you didn't ask them to rebuild your engine so it would have a leak. If you pay before they fix the problem you'll be SOL.

They sucker you to take it with leaking rear main seal.

Any shop that tells you to drive a car with a leaking rear main seal knows full well they screwed up. Having worked on Pontiacs over 50 years, no rear main seal ever stops leaking from driving it. There are no short cuts at this point, engine needs to come out, put on an engine stand, and do the rear main seal over.

As has been said, it's a common problem, always has been. Pontiac isn't the only engine that used the rope seal 2 piece design, and they all have to be done 100% correctly, or they leak.

Make them fix it before you pay for it. No, you should not have to pay for anything over, and above what you current bill is. There is an inferred parts, and labor warranty on repairs, and they're on the hook for it. The car hasn't even left the garage, and there are problems.

I have no idea what they used for a rear main, but BOP makes 2 different styles of synthetic replacements, a one piece, and a 2 piece design. You might suggest they try one of these if they aren't sure how to properly do a rope seal.

"Complete rebuild" means different things to different people! Did you get an itemized list of parts and labor. Was it hot dipped, magged, bored? If not bored, what did the cylinders measure? Sounds like it was "Freshened up", which also is very vague.
