I have a 400 in a 79 T/A with 670 heads. I don't have the bracketry for it. I need all brackets for alternator and power steering pump. E-mail to hrjim@frognet.net
Thanks -- Jon

Jon,
Are you using the early timing cover from 65-68 or the 69-up cover. The waterpump has 9 bolt holes for the early. 11 bolt holes for the late.

I am using the later timing cover. The engine is a '74.

The 79 and similar years took an alternator bracket that the main bolt threaded into the head . Early heads don't have a boss or hole(my 70 replacement RAIVs had the boss we drilled the hole.
You can make a template of some late heades and drill it(I have a set of 16 heads someone did this) but it is on an angled part of the head and will be hard to drill unless you use a press or milling machine.

Otherwise you will have to use earlier type bracketry.

My heads don't have the boss where the hole should be. I need the earlier style bracketry. But will the early brackets work with the late timing cover? What about my p/s pump?

I had a nightmare with a motor I built. I used a 73 455 block with 1968 RAII heads. My brackets didn't work so I found a beater Bonneville and stripped it. Your crank pulley will not line up with the water pump or power steering pump. I had a custom crank pulley made to compensate. You can also try to shim the crank pulley yourself. I personally would use an older timing chain cover so everything works fine.

I found a '70 Formula with #13 heads. The timing cover is the later style, and the #13 heads have the same bolt holes as my #670's. I had to use the crank pulley and the water pump pulley from the Formula. My crank pulley was about an inch larger in diameter. My water pump pulley was about a half of an inch too long. I also had to use the p/s pump off the Formula. The best part is that the belts that I had on my 403, that I swapped out, now work on the 400. Everything bolts up perfectly. Thanks for all your help
