Default Super Duty PCV setup? why?

Years ago I had seen an SD with the PCV in the filler cap but didn't give it much thought. Someone has listed it for sale and reminded me of this bit of trivia.

So I'm wondering, this must be to help reduce oil consumption. Does it work?

Anyone have personal experience?

Interesting stuff... Didn't Mopar do this too?

Seems like the help! section had a filler cap that could be used in the same way, functionally. I wouldn't need an NOS version for my non-SD car. I'll have to see if I can cobble something together! lol

I heard or read somewhere along time ago (mid 80's) the Pontiac did this with the SD455 because the 80 psi oil pump used in these motors sprayed excessive oil on the bottom of the valley pan some of which was sucked in by the pcv system. Pontiac moved the pcv to left valve cover to prevent this. My cousin built a 455 with a 80 psi pump for his 67 GTO and it had excessive oil consumpsion. He moved the pcv to the left valve cover and the excessive oil consumpsion stoped. The RAV also had the 80 psi oil pump but all that I have seen still have the PCV in the valley pan.

The RAV valley pan wasn't an EGR pan either.

The EGR pan stuck down further into the valley area.

Can this really make such a big difference in oil consumption? I had my SD455 just rebuilt and it does burn oil...i just added a PCV to the passengerside valvecover wich is connected to the exhaust...i hope this will help.

I didn't have an oil consumption problem but did have an issue with the engine throwing oil out of the dipstick tube at higher rpms with just the stock pcv valve. I added another to the passenger valve cover running to the air filter housing figuring it should add some venting when the rpms went up. It hasn't thrown any oil since.

Adding a PCV valve in the fresh air tube restricts flow of crankcase gases to air cleaner at WOT and fresh air to the crankcase at cruise speeds.
This tube needs to be unrestricted.
Two PCV valves will upset the carb calibration.
