Default R.I.P. Melanie

R.I.P. Melanie Safka.

Great singer/songwriter from the 60's. Played Woodstock & made some really cool music. Lay Down with The Edwin Hawkins Singers & Look What They Done To My Song Ma, were two of my favorites!

She had a few good ones. Always liked “ Brand new key”.

I listened to a few of her songs on Youtube just a week or so ago. Powerful voice that sounded good decades after her few hits. Sad news. RIP

Back around 2001 she and her husband Tom came over from Tampa to Orlando to look at a 75 or 76 GMC Eleganza at the place I was working. She had an itch for one, having fond memories of one that her buddies in Sha-Na-Na used as a tour bus back in the day. Her husband was pretty practical and needed some assurance that a 25 year old vehicle would have support. They did buy it. I hope they got some enjoyment with it. I read of his passing several years ago. Nice folks.

RIP Melanie. Seems we lose more & more as each week goes by.

Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)

What a great rocker! There is an extended version of this song that's worth hearing. Of course, the record company probably cut it down so that's what you will hear most of the time.

That's the only song I recognize by her.
It got regular rotation on local AM stations when I was a kid.
My mom had to tell me why roller skates and a key had a connection.
I had a nice set of indoor roller rink skates and there was no key involved , i was mystified.

Back in the late 60’s or early 70’s, she was playing at a local college. Me and a buddy somehow managed to get back stage after the show, and met her. She autographed the denim jacket I was wearing. Very nice and cordial to us. RIP Melanie.

I was so proud of that autograph, that is until my mother washed the jacket, and goodbye autograph.
