Different timing numbers
I've got a dial back gun and a regular gun. If use the dial I get 31 total. If I put the dial on zero i get 33 degrees. If I use my regular gun I get 34 degrees,,,all consistently. My balancer has machined in marks.That ever happen to you?

Yep. That`s why a lot of folks don`t like dial backs.

I don’t like the dial backs,. In fact due to there electronics inside them within the same models for instance if you had let’s say 4 of them they would all read different . This is due to the resistors used that have a 10% tolerance. For example a common 10K ohm resistor could actually check out at 11K ohms or 9K ohms. Even if the gun was made with better quality 5% tolerance resistors that’s enough to show up as a difference. Also the knob on these guns is a resistor, a veritable resistor and with a Tolerance to it also. Use your non dial back light for a base line and then When you use the dial back just factor that difference in compared to what you read on the balancer.

I have a digital "dial back" timing light and it shows the same.
Maybe the analog lights have the issue. |

So for accuracy sake...Im probably in the 33 to 34 total area?

We have 2 older analog dial backs we've used for probably 30 years now and they both read the same.
Not sure what they are making these days for analog dial backs, they may not be as good as they used to be, but if I were needing one I'd likely go for a digital. Either way it's important to set total accurately so if your balancer is marked for total advance out that far I'd use your non dial back and use the balancer for your 34 total since it appears your dial back is a little off. Well, on a analog dial back the marked degrees are likely a sticker.
There is your variable. That sticker put on a tiny bit one way or the other matters a lot. |
