Pontiac 302?
Looking through some old Hot Rod magazines and came across this article.
Has anyone heard or remember this? |

Based on the date of the magazine, I would say it's actually the 301 they're talking about. Another clue to that is the intake manifold is very low looking and that's a characteristic of the 301

Carb has what looks to be a 2" spacer, that's 301 stuff, no dipstick on pass side and intake all point to 301.
The 301 is a 4" bore with a 3" stroke, same as the Chevy 302, Pontiac just called it a 301, likely to be different... Since the engine was new at that time, Pontiac may not have declared it a "301" yet...

I remember the article and it was definitely about the upcoming 301 Pontiac. The article was very optimistic about its capabilities, a bit too optimistic as history later proved.

iirc Smoke Signals recently had an article, that was something along the line of the 301 was actually a 302, but Chevy had dibs on that, so they had to reclassify it as a 301...

I always thought about trying to build a destroked 326 that would turn about 7,000 rpm.

1978 GP SJ, 301. My daughters first car. That car went through hell and was always there, she still misses it today.

I had the 4bbl 301 in my 79 Formula Firebird. I liked that "little" engine al lot. It even spank the hell out of a 79 Ford Thunderbird with a 302 in it. And I miss it too.

In the early stage.303 heads are almost done, put the factory foils in the ports to reduce some port vol.The block is at the shop being checked out and having the cam tunnel line honed.I have the forged Scat 3 3/4 crank waiting to go to Marine crankshaft to have the thrust welded and the rods turned for BBC.Still need to order the 6.125 BBC rods.Once the crank-block are done I can order the pistons.I have the Xram 2-4 intake and dizzy for it.Have a set of the hybrid head gaskets.Really on the hunt for a factory affordable single 4 intake to have onhand for the startup.I have just put the 428 V engine in the bird and want to get it on the road and drive it for awhile. When things get close I will start a new thread on it.Tom

For years I heard people bash the 301. IMO it was great for what it was marketed as, just a simple, basic, economical small V8. I think it got a bad rep when someone bought a T/A and expected it to be a musclecar.
It was even torque plated from the factory as was the new iron Duke as they had similar parts. I had a old Bonnie beater I commuted in for years and put a lot of miles on it without any issues. It even retired a decent 20 mpg.
