I just wanted to let you know about the shipping condition of a recent order I received from RockAuto (RA). The order contained a water pump and a rotor & brake pad kit (2 different shipments).
The water pump arrived in great condition, there was no issue there. However, I was shocked at how poorly the brake kit was packed when it arrived-DAMAGED. The kit, (4 rotors, 2 sets of pads, and brake hardware) was shipped in a standard RockAuto box (12x12x12X12). For packaging, it contained a small sheet of bubble wrap and was sealed with ONE STRIP OF TAPE to seal the box top and bottom. Absolutely sub-standard packaging for a box that weighs 57 pounds! (The waterpump box on the other hand had multiple rows of tape top and bottom to seal the box and weighed less than 8 lbs). As a result, the bottom of the box broke open at some point during the trip and all of the contents of the shipment appeared to have fallen out. The box arrived at my home, open, bottom side up. The brake pad boxes were open, and while the rotor boxes didn't look bad, they had clearly fallen out at some point too. Not everything was put back into the box when it opened and it arrived missing items (lube kit). Normally, I would chalk it up to the weight of the box being the issue, but in this case I cannot blame the shipper (FedEx). The box was prepared so poorly, I would have been more surprised if the package arrived undamaged! Shipping everything in one box is dumb, but one band of tape to seal a 57 pound box with no indication of the heavy weight is just STUPID. When I inquired with RA and told them what happened, they said that "brake parts are pretty tough, you should be OK." But after thinking about it more, and since they are brake components, I opted to return the parts and hardware. I didn't know what happened to those parts, or if the box fell off of a conveyor belt that was 4 ft. high, or 14 ft. high. I just would not feel comfortable putting them in a car that my wife and kids drove everyday. I also thought I should have had my shipping costs refunded (both ways) since it was packaged so poorly. Long story short, I did send all the parts back. RA refused to refund my shipping costs, and I had to pay to ship the parts back too. And although I am out about $50, they will be out much more since I will NEVER buy parts from them again, nor will I ever recommend them to anyone. Buyer beware. |

I believe that Rock Auto relies on shipments coming from different suppliers/warehouses;
I have twice had issues with shipping, and RA has always made it right. I cannot think of a single time where the package wasn't in a box, inside of packing material, inside another box... I too would be concerned about the braking material being damaged from poor packaging, and would have earnestly pushed the point, because even though FedEx did their part to place the contents into the package from which they fell out, the poor packaging was the problem - what would have happened if a FedEx employee missed one of the parts which fell out?
