Forget about 455's or SD-455's, just this small change from a 350 to a 400 in the 1974 GTO would have made a world of difference. Pontiac wouldn't have had to change any suspension, exhaust, or cooling components in the process, other than perhaps using the Turbo 400 instead of the Turbo 350 trans.
You're right Mike.....that combo would have been a game changer for many buying new, would have been a very neat setup with a few rear gear options.

Pontiac could have done anything they wanted, even the HO within the regs ...but....
I remember sitting in gas lines, odd even days, running out down at the beach, not going on vacation due to gas....people went from "performance" mindset to" oh snap, Ive got to find something right away much better on gas".

That realization hit almost overnight: the fear that the Arabs and the Oil Embargo was going to stay "forever".

The Feds also had new Auto Safety rules in play......crash standards and more.

A lot changed in 1974.

PS: People who appreciate performance should try and at least drive a newer GTO, esp the 2005 to 2006.
I think a short drive may impress the non believers.....

Anyone know how to block a user? I'm tired of opening threads to have to scroll trough 8 consecutive posts or half the posts in a thread that are from Alvin.

The Title of this thread is

GTO Acceptance

Not 74 GTO acceptance, and it's posted in the lobby, not in the 71-77 Ventura including 74 GTO section..............so get over it already!

And don't forget about the extra 400 lbs. being a "real plus" with the 73 vs. the 70. I suppose that could really help to keep it hunkered down in the corners.

I don't know what a '70 weighs, but I really doubt it is 3300..

The uninformed enthusiasts think all of the '73's are 4100 lbs. That is a load of pure steaming horse sh!t. Do some research before shooting off that crap.

Probably does. Hate to break it to ya, but there are guys out there, myself included, who don't like the '70's, or any of the "overly highly esteemed" "real" GTO's.

I did. And I was also around when they were new. They were @4k lbs plus. 70's were typically @3600 or so. That 400 lb difference is the way it was. No "research" will change that. 73's were bloated and underpowered compared to the earlier ones. Styling is subjective. I personally found the 73 Grand Am's much more attractive than the GTO's of the same year except for maybe the hood. Too bad the Grand Am styling wasn't used on the Goat to avoid the "new for 73" Federally mandated fugly front bumpers.

Of course there are. There are fans of just about everything. even AMC Pacers. What's the point here? The 73's and 74's weren't as popular as the earlier ones. It was true then and it's still true now. I'm sorry your feelings are hurt but facts are facts. I still enjoy seeing 73's and 74's though.

Post a nice example of each for sale here or run them through an auction and watch the results.
