I'm jealous!!! Your car looks awesome!! I have a Fremont built 67 GTO that's in about the same shape as yours was before the resto. I'm way past ready to blow it apart and get started, but I promised my wife we'd build our house first. I'm out of room in the shop right now too. Hopefully we'll get the house built later this year and then I can start on the goat in the next couple of years. I love getting her out and just can't bring myself to tear her down until I'm REALLY ready to get the resto on!

Thanks man .

Well I tried "chroming it" and now I feel the need for more speed. Following a trip to my buddy's bodyshop where we pinned the hood hinges in order to provide a precision refit of my shiny hood and left it on one of his stands until I am ready for reinstallation. I came home and pulled the motor in order to check the bearings and reseal the rear main before installing some new go-fast parts. Today's inspection revealed all internal parts to be serviceable and tomorrow I plan to pull the cam, and check the cam bearings prior to installing the new hyd. roller cam and solid roller lifters.

I'm all for speed goodies but you're not really putting solid roller lifters on a hyd roller cam...

Mitch,
I'm taking Cliff's suggestion since he runs the same parts in his low 11 second Ventura and Dave Bischop who cnc-ported my KREs recently mentioned that solid roller lifters on a juice cam have produced some of the quietest valve trains that he has heard. My good buddy Tom S., is also a long time proponent, particularly for high revs. A slight reduction in lifter weight and the availability Hippo option that pressure feeds the axles and bearings, convinced me to use these parts together.

Today's activities included degreeing the cam (108.5, spot on the marks), rechecking the piston to valve clearance, replacing the leaking rear main seal w/ the Best Gasket graphite rope seal (piece of cake, after pulling rod caps and pushing all pistons down to deck heigth, and pulling crank), installed one head gasket (Cometics $$$), one head (310cfm KRE), one PPR shaft rocker mount, and using an adjustable pushrod I determined that I need a 9 11/16" length custom p-rod. Tomorrow I will email the p-rod order to Smith Bros. Rushrods in Bend OE and complete the top end assembly in time to install the pushrods when they arrive. One of my good racing buddies Bill Baker, assisted me in degreeing the cam w/ his mega sized wheel.

WOW, that sure blows the old thinking out the window. I was always told a hyd cam isn't hard enough to withstand the pounding of a solid lifter for long. Maybe the roller lessens the impact enough to absorb the shock and not mushroom the cam lobe.....very unconventional thinking on someone's part to come up with that combination. I hope it works for you.

Arrow Project update.........

As I previously posted: the forward, engine, & dash harnesses were hacked beyond recognition, requiring replacement custom harnesses to accommodate numerous electrical aftermarket devices such as the Electric-Life power windows and the LineLoc. With that accomplished, the GTO no longer fails to start, stalls when the fuel pump goes momentarily dead, or burns the roofrail lights @ high rpms . It now operates with new car efficiency, something I began to think was impossible .

Well, I now have sufficient experience with the new SD top end parts to recommend the solid roller lifters on the "Old Faithful" hyd. cam combo. This setup along with Super Dave's cnc'd 305cfm heads took a full second out of my 4200# race weight GTO. The soild/juice valve train is the quietest that I have ever experienced. I recently checked the lash and found that it was spot on the .005 cold setting, confirming the high quality of the parts and their ability to work together.

Talking Performance update...

Sharren and I drove the GTO to the Pontiac Heaven event in April, ran a 11.90/115.6, and drove it home completing my 5 year quest for an 11 second street car that is capable of comfortable 2-place touring performance .

Congrats on your beautiful '66. Just read your original post, and wanted to share this: a lot of original A bodies had red oxide primer from the cowl back, but a black primered front clip. My '67 GTO convert was this way when I re-did it in '93. I have read elsewhere that this was pretty much s.o.p. So, I think you can rest easy knowing that your car was never wrecked!!! I have a Fremont built '65 as well, and I think it's the same: I can see red primer thru the worn paint on the door jambs, but where the paint is worn around the inner fender/hood area, there is no red primer. Again, NICE CAR!!

That sounds super Les. I sure wish you had a video so we could hear it run. I bet it's super quiet and smoothe as silk.

Another congrats on the outstanding quality of your build. I still hope to emulate it some day....well probably not the 11.90, but a car that looks as good would be nice.

Very nice, awesome performance from a car with all of the nice features a truly road-worthy touring car should have.

Top-shelf stuff as always.

It's certainly a pleasure seeing the excellently detailed and finely-tuned cars in the Wheelspin Pontiac stable.

I used M & H electrical harnesses, as sold by our host Performance Years and the best for my purpose. Prior to installing the forward, engine, and dash harnesses I added additional wiring to each loom (12V switched) to operate my aftermarket electrical accessories such as power windows, cruise control, and exhaust cutouts. Full car wiring looms, like Autowire are also an option, but I wanted the stock appearance and fitment.

Yes, they plug in and the dash harness includes a new fuse box.
