gtoric:I've read the same info saying that the 1970 GT-37 400 4speed was the fastest pontiac in 1970.I dont agree with that I think the 1970 GT0 with the RAlV 4speed is faster.I've been told that the 1970 GT-37 was faster than a 1970 GTO with a 400 RAlll 4speed but not a RAlV.

Judgeman, Remember that ALL GT-37's began as T-37's w/350 and 3 speed MT. 6 cyl was available on T-37 but to get the GT option you had to upgrade to at least the 350.

gtoric, I don't know what the Lemans 400s were rated, but I think you're right. I've seen copies of the AMA records showing what engines were available and I recall the 400 having a different hp.
As I'm more of a numbers guy and not really mechanically inclined, I can't answer your question regarding the exhaust manifolds. I took pics of my friend's engine last year but I don't have access to the pics at the moment - if you had posted earlier, I would have grabbed them when I visited my parents. I CAN tell you, however, that the engine code was the same as the 400/350 from the GTO. The engine number was off the VIN by one or two, so I am pretty sure it is the original engine. My friend is not into funny stuff, and the car was so sun-baked that it's illogical for someone to try to restamp the block beforehand. In regards to Judge Man's following post on the 400 4bbl., Sawruk's claim was the 400-4 stick cars received the same engine as the RAIII in the GTO but without the RA plumbing. So the engine availability, according to him, was the 350-2, 400-2, and the 400-4 (the latter being the RAIII). The sequence skips the 400/330-350. However, from my findings and yours, it seems the 400-4 was the GTO's base 400. So was Sawruk mistaken? Or was the car he mentions a working prototype as he remembers? So far, the proof proves him wrong. |

Mine, with mucho incorrect stuff. Its a 71 nothing to special GT-37. Its awaiting the honeycombs that need tires, correct paint on the mirrors, and much much much more.

My mistake on the 6cyl.vs.350,it list all these engines on my PHS docs thats why I type them down.Like Spartan said there has'nt been a 70 GT-37 pop up with an orginal RAlll installed in the car.I dont know how many still exsist with the orginal 400 4bar. motors in them but so far it seems that the ones that have pop up have been the WT code 400 350hp.I think the car that was tested in 1970 had a RAlll in it but the RAlll never was available in the rest of the cars being made.

My father was a car dealer in 1971 and he ordered a 1971 GT-37 and it has been in the family ever since it has the wing on the back a hood tach 455 motor automatic bench seat no carpet I asked him why he didnt get the GTO and he told me he couldnt stand the long front end on them (go figure).

Guys,
Just wondering... Have never seen it in published writing where Sawruk stated that '70 1/2 400 4bbl manual trans equipped GT-37s/T-37's had WS code engines. I keep seeing this referred to as something John said or wrote, if so it is def erroneous. Could this not be misinfo, as someone mistakenly noted the presence of the "12" casting heads & jumped to the conclusion the 400 was "RAIII"? All the original engine '70 1/2 400 GT-37's I've documented over the years have been equipped as such: 400 4bbl/ M40: 400/330hp... XV code small valve press-in stud 16's 400 4bbl 3spd & 4spd: the WT coded base 400 GTO engine. ALL had std exhaust manifolds, not RAIII pieces Spartan, Thanks for posting the above invoice copy. Is this last years AZ car?

OPH:
Yes, that's the AZ car. Regarding the RAIII claims, I believe I've seen it mentioned in a column a long time ago in PE. I also wanna say I've seen it in one of Marty Schorr's books from the early 1980s. If any of you have it, take a glance and see. Point is, in the end, I think it's been quoted by him rather than being an old wive's tale. Judgeman: "Bump" means that I place a post to bring, or bump, the topic to the top so people notice it rather than getting lost in the clutter. You had not indicated you noticed the invoice and I wanted to make sure you saw it. |
