Indy
I realize it's more than a week away. But, I wanted to
get this out there. I consider it fairly big news in the Pontiac racing world, IF it comes to pass. I've mentioned it before, but it hasn't happened yet. This time, maybe it will. Long time Chevy racer Bruce Noland is on the Indy Stock pre-entry list, with a '69 Trans Am ! https://www.nhraeventreg.com/ListEve...II1&cc=8&rn=17 NO, it's not a real one. But how long has it been since ya'll saw even a fake '69 T/A Stocker, at Indy, or any race ? I've never seen or heard of one. Maybe a Pontiac dealer put one on the track back when they were new. Don't know. Don't remember ever seeing a pic of one. The closest thing I've seen is the white '69 Bird that John Schloe has raced for years. Many here know that he raced it with a RAIV engine, 'til he cracked a head. Bruce can run either a RA3 or RA4. The RA4 would REALLY make it cool. Would also be much more competitive, if built correctly. IF the DRC specs are correct, the 2 engines have exactly the same NHRA hp factor, which is 356. The RA4 has the advantage of the round port heads, 1.65 rockers, & .531 total valve lift. http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...2&MAKE=Pontiac But IMO, the RA4 heads are much too valuable to race. John Schloe has been running 10's with his '69 Bird for years. Guessing he claims the 330hp 400. It's factor is 345hp. http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...9&MAKE=Pontiac But, if Bruce has his Bird set up as a T/A, I think the RA3 & RA4 are the only 2 engine options. IF he runs the RA4, the car has the potential to be the quickest Pontiac powered Stocker, ever. As far as I know, Scott Burton's RA4 '70 Bird currently holds that title. Bruce has listed his car in C/SA. So, he'll need to run pretty close to a mid 10, to be super competitive, in heads-up races. At Indy in 2019, 4 C/SA cars went under 10.50. The quickest went 10 flat. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2019#indextop |

" Are the Edelbrock round port heads OK'd by NHRA for replacement heads. I'm pretty sure the 428 Pontiacs can run Edelbrocks in Super Stock "
From what I can find, the 60587 Edelbrock heads are legal for reg SS & GT SS, on 1968 428 engines, and on both '69 & '70 RAIV engines. They are not legal on any other Pontiac engines, or for any Stock classes, so far as I can find. http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...9&MAKE=Pontiac Not sure why they wouldn't be OK for the '68 RAII engines. Also not sure why they were made legal for the 1968 D-port 428's, & not the other years. Also not sure why the Edelbrock alum D-ports are not legal for any Pontiac engine. I suppose the answer is politics. I've heard that somebody has to have some pull with the right people at NHRA in order to get certain parts approved. That's probably true. IIRC, Lynn McCarty had a hand in getting those alum E-heads approved. Could be wrong. Anybody know for sure ? Last edited by ponyakr; 08-23-2021 at 01:28 PM. |

Legal Parts & Rules
This is just my own opinion on the subject of legal aftermarket parts for Stock & SS class racing. Lots of the rare high performance factory parts are now extremely expensive, & harder to find than ever. Makes sense to allow similar aftermarket replacement parts. I mean, think about it. Except maybe for the crank. a legal 428 SS engine can now be built using VERY few(or may no) factory GM parts. Only factory GM parts you'd have to add for Stock class would be iron heads & the intake.
I mean, Stocker cams & valve spring pressures are ridiculous. Forged pistons are legal. Lightweight transmissions & high stall converters are legal. Stockers are nowhere near "Stock". So, why not make the aftermarket parts legal, so the rare factory parts would not be needed ? But, I've noticed that lots of stock racers are REAL sensitive about any little rule change that might make another racer's car quicker, but not their own. And, many are VERY protective of the "same class heads-up rule". They really get defensive when someone says Stock racing is just bracket racing. They think that because they had flogged a certain combo for years and/or spent lots of money making it quick, they should be rewarded for that. They don't think anybody should just be able to go really quick, against their index, unless they have either worked on it for a long time, makin upgrades, or have paid a lot of money for a turn-key car. And, it's been my experience that many of these guys are quick to throw F-bombs at you, if you say anything about the Stock rules they don't like. But, I'm sure there are lots of really nice Stock & SS class racers. I no longer have a dog in the hunt. So, my opinion don't really count. This is just my observations from having posted on & having read lots of posts on Class Racer & other car forums. I've read some REAL lively rule discussions on the Class Racer site. |

My understanding of why the Edelbrock D port head is not legal for stock classes is because the port cc's are to large. For Super Stock you are able to modify the port and so can reduce the port cc's to the legal number.

The excuse I've been given as to why the Edelbrock or Kauffman heads have not been approved for Stock is because both of those heads have angled spark plugs so that makes them not look stock. Like a 383 or 340 Mopar or a 390 Ford (those motors have approved Edelbrock heads) looks stock with an aluminum head!?
As for the port size, that seems to be the $64k question because the Edelbrock heads that are legal for the Mopars are also way over spec and from what I've heard takes a huge amount of money to make them legal. |

Gathering Of the Geezers
A Stock/SS combo race was part of this event, @ Kil-Kare Raceway.
https://www.facebook.com/KilkareRace...1768818512681/ "...Mid Ohio Paving Dial for Dollars - Dave Batta 11.722 on a 11.72 dial J/SA Firebird Parsons & Myers Best Losing First Round Package- Rob Holmes J/SA Firebird with a .062 pack..." I assume this means that Dave ran closer to his dial than anybody else, during eliminations, and Rob lost in E-1, but had the best package of all the losers. Anyhow, I think both these Birds are Pontiac powered. I assume they are both running the base 400 engine. Dave's Bird is the former HPP mag car that was raced by Mark Yacavone & his wife, back in the 90's, I believe it was. I don't have a current pic of it. If anybody has a good one, please post it. Rob's Bird is named "Kemo Sabe". It has been a strong running car for years. |

Pettigrew Engine ?
Was just lookin at the Stock pre-entry list for the upcoming US Nats.
Noticed that Thomas Pettigrew is listed driving a '78 Pontiac. IIRC, he has the Bird that Tibor Kadar drove, back in around 2006. I think that was the year Tibor got RU in Stock points. It was posted on this site that he was running the car as a 350 Pontiac powered '77. On the Indy pre-entry list, the '78 Pontiac Thomas is driving is Chevy powered. Is this correct ? Is anybody familiar with this car/driver ? https://www.nhraeventreg.com/ListEve...II1&cc=8&rn=17 Last edited by ponyakr; 08-23-2021 at 07:43 PM. |

Bruce Noland '69 T/A
Found some pics on his FB page.
It does have T/A trim on it. It does have a factory type alum intake. So, I have to assume he's gonna run it as a RAIV powered '69 T/A. Cool ! Hope he has it at Indy & it runs good. |

Div 6
In Stock, Norman Warling is #3, with his '62 Cat.
Diane Burton is #23. Her husband Scott is #24. And her son Brad is #25, How cool is that ? What would REALLY be cool is if Scott was still driving a Pontiac powered Stocker. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop In SS, Carroll Warling is #2. His car is listed as a '68 Lemans. If that is correct, I find it very interesting. In recent years, he's raced a '74 Lemans & a '74 GTO. Haven't heard of anybody driving a '68 Lemans GT car. Scott Burton is #7, with his 3rd gen GT Bird. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop Brad won the Stock/SS combo race ! https://www.facebook.com/yellowstone...7720314712354/ Last edited by ponyakr; 08-27-2021 at 12:08 PM. |

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop His Dad survived 2 rounds of SS. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop They're supposed to finish that race today, then begin the next race. They're expecting a rainout at the div 1 race, today. I can remember how much I hated rainouts. |

Clegg Sponsored '74 T/A Video
For those who like Pontiac drag racing videos, you may enjoy these. They're of the '74 T/A Stocker which is sponsored by(& I assume owned by) John Clegg's Mission Garage.
There is plenty of sound, too ! For anyone who is not aware, this will let you know how radical the current Stocker cams are. https://www.facebook.com/john.clegg....0077237642139/ https://www.facebook.com/linda.cleve...45416215472220 And here's the 9 sec '73 SD455 Super Stocker. https://www.facebook.com/john.clegg....36393977054756 Last edited by ponyakr; 08-28-2021 at 04:45 PM. |

The big news is that Bruce Noland is on the list with his '69 T/A. It wasn't blazing fast.
