I really do appreciate being humoured. so was there nothing remaining of the section from the top of the water pump to the carb? this seems to be the point where I get confused - because some say the line should be on one side of the thermostat housing, while other sources cite the other side... Man I really got to see that black '70 at the museum some day! (too bad it's so stinking far from me!!)

The door locks wouldn't operate with either the key or using the pull knobs, so Dan removed the panels and discovered the lock mechanisms were liberally coated with Ziebart rust-causing. So, a little PB Blaster on a rag with judicious elbow grease got them working properly again...maybe the first time in their lives, or when the Ziebart hardened.
The passenger side door handle still had the Deluxe Interior Trim color applique in the recess, albeit a little faded, but still there. The driver side was MIA. Dennis |

Black is the new Orange
Dan got around to changing the air cleaner base color to semi gloss black. He didn't find the date stamp in the area you indicated HFR unfortunately. The paint came off easily with light bead blasting and a couple of coats of black semi gloss and its looking a bit more factory.
Today is checking the compression and cylinder pressure to see how healthy the motor is. Dennis |

I just noticed that this has non-recessed wipers.
Nice work thus far.

Dennis,
Just out of curiosity since the car has a lot of original finishes under the hood (air cleaner notwithstanding ), can you tell whether the hood hinges were originally painted black, or were they plated?

Keith, were any ever painted? I always thought they were phosphate plated.
Better looking under the hood. Only decal for it is the Osborn piece, that I know of. Is the vent pipe curved like the repros? Master needs updating or at least painted black.

Yes, I've seen many that were painted black (could have been an e-coat as well, but black nonetheless) -- not phosphated. That's an observation that's very specific to '70 model year Firebirds, however. In general, GM's practice seemed to have been grey phosphate.

Dan & I did a leak down test and static compression ratio checks cold and warm to see if there were any differences. The leak down was done cold, so will be 5-10 psi low...:
#1 - 175 #2 - 185 #3 - 175 #4 - 170 #5 - 170 #6 - 175 #7 - 180 #8 - 165 They all read steady and held pressure just fine. We think #8 in an anomaly. The compression test was done on the Katech Whistler both cold and warm (50 and 180 degrees motor iron temp). It appears this 400 has never been apart and at 47,000 miles had 10.0 to 1 cold and 10.5 to 1 warm compression...very interesting. The distributor still has its original advance weights and springs and has a very slow curve helping keep detonation at bay on 93 octane fuel. it hasn't been run on the street yet, but we are sure when at running temperature, it will need to be closely monitored for ping and detonation. It was also a nice day (50 degrees!) to take a couple of outdoor pics in the sun. Dennis |

Does that passenger hinge have the '524' stamped on it?
Very nice to see a good 70 Formula.

Stamped.
On forward arm of hinge. Right above the pivot point on engine side of hinge. (about an inch above?) Same for driver side except has '525' stamped.

Thanks Craig! I just sent those pics to Dan to see he can find them on the hinges. Pictures are worth a 1000 words.

Found the '525' stamp on the driver side hinge, but no stamp on the passenger side, though the hinge looks original.
