A well-tuned 350 GT-37 being a contender to the Olds 350?

Hell, you can tune it all you want and have it beat a Hemi, but it don't mean nuthin'.

In regards to the fastest Pontiac in 1970, I believe it was in Marty Schorr's "Pontiac: The Performance Years" and it was written by Sawruk. He claimed it was a T-37 or Tempest (probably the latter) and it had the RAIII 400 4-speed combo, as he's mentioned in the past.

However, we now know that the 400 stick cars got the standard GTO's engine, not the RAIII. Plus, Jim Mattison has yet to find the invoice on this car, so chances are it was a pre-production vehicle, and it remains to be seen if Sawruk's memory was off or production cars simply had a different engine.

that is true, mine has the WT with 12 casting heads. back about 25+ years ago, i was going to swap out the exhaust manifolds for ram air 3 ones and add a ram air 4 cam and intake, but just decided to leave it alone. glad i did now.

OK to clear things up, 'jr. muscle car' meant a lower price, not 'less powerful'.

I know where one 1971 400/4 speed bench car is. It's very rough. You'd have to be a restoration hero to take it on.

Wow, that doesn't say much about the '70 RAIV then.

actually if you go back and look at magazine tests, the ra4 wasnt that much faster than ra3 cars. if my memory serves me correctly, the info stated that the gt-37 was considerably lighter than the gto and trans am. i also was thinking somewhere in the info it stated the gt-37 was 3:90 geared . the info on the gears actually may have been what john sawruck told me in one of our several gt-37 conversations. i do remember talking about this info with him and he validated (according to him) that it was true about the gt-37 being the quickest pontiac made in 70 and he said the 71 with a 455-ho gt-37 was the quickest 71.

Wasn't the RA IV available in the GT-37?

No, Ram Air was not an option with the flat hood.

"Jr. Musclcars" were typically Olds 350 Ramrods or 350 Rallyes, L-79 Chevelles and Novas and the T-37/ GT-37 Pontiacs...most of which were 350 equipped. Most would fall into the Jr. Stock classes at NHRA or AHRA events. Buick had a GS 350 as well. Just some food for thought. I've never heard of a Hemi Dart or a COPO Camaro referred to as a Jr. amything...and they were bare bones cars. Come to think of it...I never heard the term "musclecar" used until about the 80's! lol Ron

The Plymouth Road Runner was a bare bones muscle cars in 1968-70, compared to the Charger and GTX. Had bench seat, column shift, but the cartoon decals and "beep-beep" horn added character. GTO sales peaked in '68 and started to slide, so the GT-37 was a way to get buyers who couldn't afford the Goats/Judges. Also, they could tell insurance companies "I only have a Tempest".

The 72 LeMans GT took its place.

Cheesecake, that is a good-looking car. Even a 350/350 GT-37 is worth re-doing.

I agree these cars are interesting and judging by what you see at shows not that many survived and or were restored. I went and looked at one posted on here that was a 350/350 car lucy blue on blue w blk sword stripe, just too far gone NOM not a good piece of sheetmetal left and the frame was bad. Still had the orig hood pins which I plucked as spares as well as the taillights and some other small parts. In the previos pictures something looks off in the hood pins placement? is that just me or an illusion? Mark

Hood pins are in the same spot as the factory hood (was kinked, had to replace). 7.52 inches up from the front, 24 inches over from the middle of hood. Lines up with the hood pin post mounted in the core support.

It is an original Quezal Gold car, but the body guy painted it some other shade. He swears that he double checked with suppliers and got a color chip, etc. But I think he painted it Baja Gold. I was mad, but the new color is growing on me. Not as "in your face" but a nice period color. I may leave it like that!

Must be just the picture or angle that it looked like they were off. I like the color looks quite good. At some point I will get another Lucy blue GT-37 or some color that my wife will like and restore it. i have a lemans GT for my daughter and a sport for my son to go with my GT-37. Mark
