Very exciting.
I really appreciate the work.
BTW that was a good tip on the rod bolt condoms.. Having the edge hold the bearings in place.. Didnt want that tip to go unnoticed.

The timing cover was an exceptional surprise. I have no idea how it survived like that.. I did clean it up and paint it before I sent it. But it was super..
The pan was the Canton Stock replacement.

Thank you very much for the extra tweaks on the corner supports and the oil pump bolt surfaces..

How do you mount the oil pan? Gasket only? sealer?

Any tips on installing the graphite seal?

I have to get the TH400 done now,..

Sending the Cliff rebuilt 67 carb in the AM.

The distributor I sent was the original points distributor. I dont know how it is setup but I fully dismantled it, cleaned it, dressed the shaft up, and put in all new pieces and felt washer and greased it up... Hopefully it can keep up with the motor.

Thanks Paul!

For the oil pan, I spread leather cement[just like rubber cement] on the oil pan rail of the block, and the block side of the gasket. Let them both dry completely, then very carefully set the gaskets in place. There is no moving them around once they are set down, so you have to get them lined up perfectly before setting them down. Then I pat them down real good to make sure they are stuck good. Then I use Ultra gray Permatex between the gasket and oil pan. This way, when the bolts are tightened down, the gasket does not squish out.

I use a main cap donut[a round steel donut shaped piece I use for mounting a 2" bar in the main saddle] to shape the seal. The seal surface of the crank just happens to be the same size as the main housing bore, so I use it to conform the seal, to get it close. Then I set the crank in and turn it a few times to finish it off. Then I pull the crank out, and trim the seal with the spacers provided with the seal. These seals work good. Haven't had any leaks yet with them.

I'll check the distributor out.

I wrote power predictions on the cam card. I'll be curious to see how close I am.

I predict:

453 HP at 6200 RPM.
482 Ft. Lbs. @ 4500 RPM.

Hmm.. sounds pretty great for an all original iron Injun. We'll see...

Let me know when you want to put it on the Dyno. I may come down for that, meet up and maybe even bring the motor back with me.
Depending on work and things. So let me know what you schedule is like

Re power:
How much power do you think I give up running the 67 carb vs. a later 800 cfm carb properly prepared?
It'd be interesting to put an 800 cfm carb on the motor and test that against the 67 carb.

Don't know. Never tried that comparison. On another engine we saw a 50 HP difference going from a bigger Holley that had good A/F ratios, to a smaller Holley that Jeff built, that had about the same A/F ratios. So in that case bigger wasn't better.

Cliff could probably answer your question better than I.

Paul,

how does the torque rating compare to other motors? I had read that the smaller ring packs can free up to 30hp in some cases. It also mentioned that sealing with the smaller ring packs can be tricky, as in needing perfectly round bores.

Also what was the reason for going with the CP pistons? They look really nice.

Stock ring packs have a lot of drag. A fresh engine, with stock, replacement pistons, and rings, and rope seal takes 30-35 ft. lbs.

These pistons have Napier second rings which are a must with really light oil rings. We went with these because no one made a 400 piston in .065" over. CP made these for us for that size, without charging for a custom. This was their shelf 400 piston, but they said the demand for them is little to none, so they probably won't keep making them. They were a really good deal, it's a shame they didn't sell more. This may be the last set they sell, unless people start calling for them.

Hey Pal, are you saying my cylinders ain't round? I can guarantee you they are rounder than I am!

Got pushrods yesterday, and got them installed today. Had Smith Brothers send us some 9.000", 5/16" x .083" wall 1 piece pushrods with a 210° ball on the rocker end. No worries of it binding in the rocker at full lift.

Got the rockers adjusted.

Getting ready to install the water pump. I hate the fact that the plates sit against the aluminum timing cover, so I use the right stuff and run a thin film on the contact points on the plate, and timing cover. I let it set up overnight, and tomorrow I can install the water pump.

I found an o-ring[3/8"x 1/2" x 1/16"] that fits the dipstick collar, so I pushed it up into the top of the collar until it snapped into place. Fit perfect.

Getting it filled up with some Brad Penn oil. Will get it primed tomorrow, and film a video of the lifter valley while it's priming. Will see how much oil leakage it will have around the lifter.

I got the oil system primed. Made 65 LBS. pressure. All rockers oiled almost immediately, and all lifters were oiling around them, and out the pushrod seat. Now I just need to button this up. Here's a video of it priming.

No we didn't. He was in the Army, and had to transfer out of state. He had a GTO that someone rebuilt the engine about 10,000 miles ago in. It had some issues we had to fix and get it back on the road so he could move. It wasn't a complete machine and rebuild, just a fix it deal. I drove it some to make sure everything felt good, and I can tell you this, it hauled some major butt! If you stabbed the throttle in 1'st, 2'nd, or 3'rd, it would broil the tires. Definitely needs some chassis tuning.

Doesn't look like we'll be able to dyno today. Looking like Tuesday. He's still got a blown alcohol engine on there dealing with carb issues.

What gasket shape size are the intake ports?

As in BAD A*S, then you would be correct, Sir! I love Brad Penn Racing oil.

IIRC, 2.200" x 1.150". Don't quote me on the width, but that's what I remember it being, or there about.
