Lol. Yes that is confusing. That must be old stock from speedpro back before Topline ran Hylift Johnson and Johnson was Johnson. Or Hylift Johnson was JOHNSON, and Johnson was the earlier Johnson. Lol
The current Johnson brand lifters does not make a Pontiac oil band in a flat tappet hydraulic(as far as I know the all have the Chevy oil bands. Some retailers that 951R is $13-$14 a piece. The lowest price I have seen is a little $8-$9 a piece. Kind of a big swing in price. Over $200 for a speedpro hft lifter....hmmm. I bought some Rhoads a couple days ago and the next day I was strolling through Jegs and found I could have save nearly $40 on my purchase. Jegs is noticeable cheaper on Rhoads lifters for some reason. Seeing the Johnson name on a box (Johnson =quality) and knowing Speed pro corporate likes to have stuff made in foreign countries with less QC, reminds me of the scene in the Movie Tommy Boy “why they put guaranteed on the box”. I have trouble with the two "Johnson" names.
I prefer to say Johnson Lifters made in Muskegon Michigan and Johnson Lifters made in a back area of a business in the southern Detroit area. The Johnson Lifters (Muskegon) are the ones that Rhoads Lifters buys and modifies with the internal slot on the side of the plunger. The Johnson Lifters, (Detroit) make Roller Hydraulic Lifters apparently. But Johnson Lifters (Muskegon) has gone thru a few purchases over the lears but still makes the same USA quality lifters that they have for the last 60 years. Now Johnson Hylift. I recently bought two sets of Rhoads Lifters and the slight different in price did not bother me one bit. They were at my door a few days later. So That is MY opinion of the two "Lifter" companies called Johnson. Tom V.

Hylift Johnson Lifters, superb finish, plunger oil hole has only small burr that is not flaking out. Its clearly been cleaned well.
It has the metering plate and pushrod cup bottom metering valley that lets oiling ALL THE TIME to rockers. Im happy now, i will upgrade them by adding circlip/seger lock instead the paperclip. Edit: Ordered these thru their contact form, they dont have store so you need contact them. Last edited by Karck; 07-17-2020 at 08:06 AM. |

Well, hopefully in the near future those virus lifters will no longer be offered.

Meanwhile, i have primed and tested the lifters and they work perfectly. Lots of oil on rockers. No need to turn the engine, like you would need for the china lifters. All is now set and im building my test stand. Trying to start and run the cam in this week! |

Here’s some pics from tonight. One had a black deposit in it that I removed with a q-tip. Possibly fine grinding/polishing waste? It left a black stain on the metal (see pic). There was one larger visible flake in the residue and it appeared to be non-magnetic. Roughly 2ml of of what seemed like light machine oil in them.
