Default Motor is finally done after a year at machine shop

Finally got a call from the machine shop saying my motor was done. May 10, 2018.. was told it would be done January 3 2018. WOW what a wait. Kept giving me excuses that his supplier kept sending wrong parts for my heads.

Got it home taped it up and painted with engine paint. Installed my RARE Lb1 manifolds, flywheel and clutch and transmission.

Installed in the car and assembled everything that I have powdercoated.. and cleaned up and painted. Installed crossmember and it mounted in original spot with the transmission mount I purchased that mounts on the tailhousing.

Installed Rare X pipe system and welded all connections. 2 1/2” mandrel tailpipes out the back.

I hope no one thought I was being a smart butt with Muslcah. But he helped me with questions on getting ready for paint. Him and a few others here helped me get the car ready for bodywork and paint.

Here’s some more pictures

Tried to upload a video but it keeps telling me I can’t. To contact a moderator.

Default Bodywork and paint

After a lot of hours and work on the body. I got it ready to paint the door jams and around the trunk and hood areas. Cleaned up the under side of the trunk lid and hood and primered and painted them.

Installed the trunk lid and had a lot of trouble lining it up. Had to lay inside trunk and have my father shut me in. While I loosen bolt and shifted it around while he checked the gaps. Then I tightened it in place. Oh yes he let me out. Lol.

Installed hood that was also fun. The hood kept sticking up in the rear and middle nowhere we adjusted it. Finally posted in body shop section and was told my hinges were bad. So ordered more and tried again and was able to get it fixed.

Then moved on to getting the rest of the body ready for paint with the help of a lot of members here.

Mike,

Nope I’ve been assembling it. I’m just updating this thread. It’s at the glass shop getting the headliner, front and windshields installed now.

Continuing with the body I prepped the body for paint using a Da with 400 grit. Washed the car three times. Cleaned the whole car with alcohol and then with spray glass cleaner. The used the Wax and grease remover sold by the paint manufacturer where I brought my paint. Got it ready to spray.

Sprayed three coats of red sealer and the three coats of base coat and then four coats of Ms clear coat. Had a lot of trash in paint but all in all for my first time I think I did good.

Let the paint dry and cure for two weeks. Started wet sanding with 1200 around the whole car was doing great then I hit a style line by mistake and burned right through to the high build primer. That dropped my spirits right down. Started a thread in body section about my problems. A lot of help there. When wet sanding didn’t realize you never touch a body or style line. Also the clear I used was MS clear and should of used a Hs clear for the plans I had to get all the orange peel out of the paint job. Wanted it to look like glass.

I tried to do a repair in the areas that needed it. But fail in that because of not understanding things. When I taped off the car I did it wrong. Should of did the whole panel instead I just did the area I messed up or had to much trash in. So I had a ghost line after that. I’m writing all this because of if someone wants to do their own paint work they won’t make the same mistakes.

In my other thread (newbie painter mistakes) I learned that the whole car should of been taped off, the shelves covered with plastic, actually everything covered up and my air filter system could suck the dirt outside right off the ground. A lot of mistakes made the first time.

So with all the problems with the first time paint job I decided to repaint the whole car again. I also found out my bodywork was a good as I thought. When you spray paint every little ding or dent you missed will show up. So when over the cars bodywork again correcting the needed areas.

Then covered the walls with plastic from homer depot, re did my filter system and covered the floors with plastic and wet them down this time to keep the dust that settled down form getting kicked back into the air by dragging the air hose around.

Default New paint

Sprayed the car the second time. Turned out great with the exception of the stink bug making angel wings in the drivers side fender.

Waited two days(should of waited longer) started wet sanding process again staying away for style lines and edges by taping them off. Took my time and did each step until I was at 3000. Then started the buffing and polishing process which isn’t a easy task on the big car.

If I had it to do over I’d paid the professionals what they wanted. But all in all I’ve learned a lot!

After polishing was finish I started the assembly process. Installing all the chrome trim, badges, and script, and newly rechromed front and rear bumpers.

Got everything installed and it was time to take it off the jack stands that it had been sitting on for almost two years and drive it twenty feet while sitting on a bucket.

Most exciting and stressful time in my life at that point. A time when all that work by yourself comes to a head and hoping nothing goes wrong. That you assembled everything correctly. Everything was great except for the fact that when changing over to a dual master cylinder you didn’t adjust the length of the rod correctly and your brakes stop at the floor. Other than that it was great.

To see it sitting outside idling for the first time in two years was excellent!!

Default Time to go to the Glass shop

Well it was time to go to the glass shop to have the headliner done and front and rear windshields installed

After getting it back home after being gone a week. Flat towed it there and back.

Started finally chrome trim and pieces on body. Then moved to interior assembly.

Installed upper dash then trim inside which was fun finding the old holes after new tack strip was installed. The new headliner was excellent and I’m glad I didn’t try to tackle that part.

Then it was onto carpet install and getting the 4 speed porch installed and the boot in place. I used my soldering iron to burn the holes in the carpet after finding them with a pick. The soldering iron melts the hole in there instead of cutting and the carpet fraying and strings pulling. I test fitted all the bolts for the seat. Until I was ready for that part. Actually left them in there until that time

Default Seats

Started the seat assembly. I had custom interior work done by a local upholstery shop. I choose the color and materials.

I’ve got small things to do to finish everything up and then change to wheels and tires before I have it towed to the alignment shop. After that it will b time for the first test drive and seat the drum brakes and re Check adjustments. I hope everyone joined my build thread. I know I’ve enjoyed build this car. I appreciate everyone’s help with all my questions

About Us

The PY Online Forums is the largest online gathering of Pontiac enthusiasts anywhere in the world. Founded in 1991, it was also the first online forum for people to gather and talk about their Pontiacs. Since then, it has become the mecca of Pontiac technical data and knowledge that no other place can surpass.
