Ya know, the passanger side was much easier than the driver for us. Both where a ton of work for sure. We had to cut open and reshape everywhere, rear window, top corner by doors etc. Also did you notice how the rear of the wheel well area was just not finished? They did not come to a point, just kind of ended in some random shape. Am I making sence? I had to buy patch panels, cut off that section and weld onto the quarters! We took and aligned the doors and decklid where we wanted the in relation to the old quarters before cutting off the old quarters. This way we had something to align the new quartes to rather then just hanging them there. There was deffinatly alot of "tweeking" to get them right. I am sure all this info does for you is conform what you already know, those quarters are a b!tch. Thanks for follwing my thread.

Vinyl top trim
So I am test fitting the vinyl top trim and neet to drill holes for clips and corner pieces shown in the pictures below. The piece on top is from my grandmas car and is not in the greatest cond, the lower piece is from the LeMans parts car.
Any one have suggestions for exact locations for holes, maybe template or something?

Would the Fisher body manual have that? I have one for 67 and one for 68, I'll look and see if it's in there. It might not be the same as for a 69, but maybe someone else has a manual for the 69.

I had a real problem getting those holes located myself. One I got perfect, the other, something less than perfect.
You can make your own template using the pieces themselves. Use sheet aluminum, brass, whatever. Drill one hole in the sheet for the stud and conform it to the shape of the trim piece. Then you can cut it to outline. I should have done that but my blood was up and I was ready to get it done NOW...lol

Cool story and nice work on the ol goat so far. I have the EXACT same GTO only mine came with a Gold vinyl top. Gold exterior, gold interior and gold top. Kind of boring but still cool. I am the 3rd owner. Bought it from a guy in Alamogordo, NM while stationed at Holloman AFB around 1993 and have had it ever since. Longest I have ever owned any one car. Its currently in Sumter, SC. I tore it down to the bare frame, had the frame and bunch of other stuff powdercoated and then I moved my family back to Tx, left the car there and it sat for 3 years. I just ordered everything to do a complete new buildup of the front/rear suspension last week. Just waiting for the parts to arrive next week. I will be out there for a week to get it going. Plan to get it back to roller status and then trailer it back to San Antonio where I can finish the restoration.
My thread is really old, but I have one here on PY: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=613169

Greg, I agree, the monochrome cars are so 60-70. I really think the 1970 red or blue are the wildest. Black interior sure looks Tuff though.

Neat story!
When I buy a car half of the appeal is to know the story behind it, gives the car a "life" beyond just metal and plastic.

Makes me think of the three car link between a few of my cars;
In 85 I picked up a 69 GTO convertible in Lompoc California from the wife of the original owner. It was red on red and a sweet runner. Her husband had been an air-force career man stationed at Vandenburg AFB and the 69 was his second GTO (first was a 66 convertible). Fast forward to 93 and I'm hunting around for a AC 69 GTO to compliment my non AC car. I find in Hemmings a nice 69 hardtop in Tucson Arizona, also being sold by the wife of the original owner, also an air force man this time stationed at Davis AFB! She even sent me a VHS tape of the car. I passed on that car because in the same issue of Hemmings was a 69 GTO convertible with AC and a 4speed, I bought it from the original owner and he was a retired Air Force general (this time Lackland AFB). To top it off when talking to him on the phone to close the deal he tells me he knew the owner of my red convertible back in California and had been in the car back in the day. Now fast forward to 2007. I get a phone call from a friend advising me of a 69 hardtop for sale locally. I go and have a look, (it was a mile from my house) and I'm looking at a nice clean Arizona car, green on green. something looked familiar but I've seen and owned so many GTO's over 30+ years I didn't think much of it. When I get back home it hits me it could be that same GTO from Tucson so I go rummaging in the basement, find the VHS the lady sent me in a bin. I had to go to a friends house since I no longer had a VHS player. Sure enough, same license plate number! So I bought the car. Turns out that she sold it in 93 to a guy in Palm Springs and the guy I bought it from found it there on vacation and bought it just to flip it. What a co-incidence that it found it's way to within a mile of me after 14 years. Like a dog in a sappy movie! The red one was sold about 10 years ago but the other two are still with me. Small world and like this thread shows, knowing the history is half the fun.

North, neat story, crazy! Is that the air base sticker on the valance? I have always likes a car with a known history.
When I was 19 I bought a 66 GTO 4spd. I was fairly new to a smaller town and soon after I got my car a friend bought a 69 RAIII GTO 4spd. He was killed years later in an auto accident. His sister still owns the car and it is stored at who was at the time his best friends house. The car is in pieces and the friend has no interest in it. I hope to buy and restore the car one day. Another car with sentimental value.

Question on the convertiable pictured above. I see it has the 400 call out on the rockers. I thought that that was done on the Lemans, or Tempest not the GTO. I'm guessing my thoughts were wrong?

That's correct, they weren't on the GTO from the factory. There's a pic of a pre-production '68 that has them though, so maybe that's where the confusion comes in. I always thought they were pretty cool.
