Michael, if you can't find a supplier of original style valves, you can have the prop valve I took those lines off I gave you....pretty sure its correct for the period - even if it probably has the wrong date stamp on it.

I don't understand what you're saying.
Is there proof that these units aren't original to the car? All you've shown are the casting dates, which have no year identifier. |

When the car was converted to RHD the Brake Booster and Brake Pedal assembly where all modified to suit another Brake Pedal setup. The Master Cyclinder looks to be original and the Brake Booster Unit but not the arm that reaches to the pedal. That was cut and re welded to suit the other pedal assembly.
The Proportioning valve was left on the LH side and is a BENDIX brand which I assumed was not correct to the car and may have been changed at some stage in the conversion as most parts I thought come from GM. I could not find the date stamp on the end of the valve assembly nut nor a part no. as reffered to by the assembly manual. But I have found a code on the opposite end where a blank grommet wat fitted. V 233 and maybe a 4th no. but hard to see. Is it common for a Bendix Proprtioning Valve to be found on 73 cars. I would rebuild that master cylinder. The bleeder valve master is getting hard to find and this one is probably the original one to your car.

I couldn't find anything for a difference between the Bendix and Delco valves.

I'm not sure if the Bendix valve was specifically used with the Bendix master cylinder or not.

I am starting a campaign now for a 40th anniversary display of SD-455 firebirds (and maybe that awesome silver '73 GTO SD-455 "shoulda-been" car I have seen around here)
Is there any way you could get this car to Chicago for Nov. 23rd, 2013? it would be awesome to have it there. |

Thankyou for the invite. I would love to have the car their but I am in Australia and I have a lot of work ahead of me before this car sees the Pavement again. I hope 5 years. 10 MAX but I am sure many have said this before also. My car was a 2nd Week DEC 72 build so it actually is 40 years this week. It is in great condition for its age I could never have it ready in 11 months. Maybe one day it will see US soil again. |

73 SD Test Car Intake
Can anyone tell me if this test car when running as a pre production car was using the LS2 SD Intake or was it using a H.O. intake.
It just came to mind yesterday that I had remembered reading somewhere that a Cast Aluminium Intake was used so I dug through websites and found this article from HPP. Does anyone know what was used for testing. Its hard to make out from some of the old magazine articles of the engine bay pics as to what was used but someone with a keen eye for SD's would know better than me. http://www.highperformancepontiac.co.../photo_06.html Initial plans for the SD-455 included a cast-aluminum intake manifold similar to that found on the R/A-IV and 455 H.O. engines. But, according to McCully and Hicks, it was ultimately rejected because of poor cold-weather operation and subsequent emissions output. The production SD intake was cast iron and featured larger runners that matched the taller cylinder head intake ports. 1982-1987
So I filled a large Gap in previous owner History as I have been intouch with the owner last Sunday who owned the car from 1982 - 1987 . We talked for an hour and he knew the car inside out and where he bought it from.
He purchashed the car from a caryard in Upper North Queensland in Australia. The car was put in the yard to attract people onto the premises. It was placed at the front of the yard for the first week than it was slowly drawn further into the yard as it attracted alot of attention and was used to sell other cars or at least for the salesmen to get a chance to talk to people. He purchased this car from the yard and where ever it was driven it attracted attention. He would come out of shopping centres and their would be a small crowd around it and people snapping photos with their kids. He took the car with him when he moved south to Canberra in Lower N.S.W. where he really had trouble registering the car in 1985. They were demanding he modify the seat belts and drill holes in places he did not want to. They wanted him to fit blinkers to the guards so they could be better seen and amber ones in the rear. In the end he gave up and removed it from the road and gave it to his son for the next 2 years who later in 1987 sold it to move onto other projects. I have since recieved some photos but the quality has detiorated over the years but you can see the obvious that the eagle is incorrect. The Decal on the rear spoiler was incorrect. The wheels are correct and date coded to the car but at some stage were painted to match also and the saddle tan interior can be seen but the seats had a velour glued onto them due to wear on the vinyl. The exhaust was replaced and received the later exhaust tips. The lower spoiler is a rubber inserted into a steel strip which was riveted to the lower valence which is how I recieved the car. Maybe the original bar was damaged moving the car to Australia in 1980-1981. This owner was still very proud of the car and was sad to hear of its current condition after it had been sold on but is really glad to hear it has survived and will see the road again. I have also received some old negatives so I hope to try and get some great prints out of that. I really wished I bought the car in this condition but one day it will look worthy of a TA again and alot more original. Oh yeah and I love the end of the Number Plates. NME (ENEMY) Michael |

Brake Proportioning Valve Update
So I purchashed some correct 73 parts from Leigh today and hoped I could clear up some of the problems I was faced with.
The Proprtioning Valve that I had Was a Bendix unit. I am still not sure if it was original so I won't Discard it yet but I have an origianl 73 Proprtioning Valve that appears to be correct for my car. Here is a few Pictures of the unit I received today and the old unit as a comparison. Similar but I am not sure if it was correct. Feel free to Let me know if anyone has seen bendix units on these cars before. |

Brake Booster and Pedal Assembly
With the RHD Conversion their was a few modifications to the Braking System.
First of all the Brake Pedal Assembly Brakcet became a cut and shut to an Australian Vehicle Pedal System and to adapt the Brake Booster Shaft was cut and a modified adapter was fitted. I have since sourced parts to replace these as I am going to convert to LHD and I don't need unsightly MODIFICATIONS to my car plus it is probably dangerous when you really look at what was done. The Old brake booster is the Black One and the Lighter one I bought from Leigh as he had no need for it anymore from his 73 car. |

SD #16 and Ram Air Manifolds
I should probably let the cat out of the bag and i did forget to mention it but I have bought some SD #16 Heads and Ram Air Manifolds.
They are off for a service in the US Before I get them sent home. I will fill you in once they progress. I think these are crucial to restoring my car and will really wake up the 455. I don't have an SD 455 Block and I think Budget will beat me on that but I do have plans for this car to look as original as possible and I am that little bit closer. Their date codes are Dated J-18-2, K-28-2 and I believe they were taken from a 74 SD car. Is anyone out their using a Ram Air IV cam with SD #16 Heads as I would love to hear a video of them running it. Last edited by mscicluna007; 12-16-2012 at 05:40 AM. |
