Is the car cleaned up?
I'd love to see some dirt-free pictures. Inside and outside!! This is a cool & unusual car!

I did wash it with Palmolive detergent. It had several areas where motor oil was spilled on the finish. The paint was slightly oxidized prior to its 32 year storage. I am in the process of cleaning up the paint, and what areas I have polished, the finish looked good. Pics to follow.

Love this car & happy you are saving! Will be a stunner & most important DIFFERENT. I had a full tilt, cammed 455, headers, 2800 stall, in a column shift 72 Formula. I will attest that power shifting a column shift is possible. Just don't zoom past into N. And definitely don't spaz into R

I was able to change out the PCV, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and add the distributor RF shielding. Before this however, the entire car was treated to a good, thorough pressure wash of the engine compartment, and undercarriage, which removed a few pounds of dirt and cobwebs. After all of the work, the car fired right up and ran absolutely perfect. I added a couple of pints of ATF, and the TH400 transmission finally decided to function. The car moved about 20 feet on it's own for the first time in 30 years. Since the brakes are not working at this time, I did not road test the car. Progress is being made!

77 Canamman - Nice work...on a nice Formula! I really like that combo and the way it was optioned. Many Firebirds were made with the column shift as many dealers forgot, or didn't realize ordering the console was the only way to get the floor shifter. We have a '73 455RA Formula (4-spd) that comes to the Pure Stock Drags that runs 14 flat at 103 mph with 3.42 gears and weighs 3700 lbs. These cars can run with the big dogs with a little tuning and driving skill.
I'm looking forward to watching your progress! Dennis |

I was able to begin the brake rebuilding. New AC Delco rotors and pads along with remanned calipers and new hardware were successful. I was able to drive the car around the block. Since the tires are dry rotted, I kept the speed under 30. It lights up the old BFGs with only a blip of the throttle.

1973 Formula 455 also
Following this because I am about ready to start this process on my original 73 Formula 455 with Ram air with 27,000 miles to get it road worthy. This was an Akron OH car that sat for years with some poor storage. It has some minor low quarter and tail panel rust, but none in floors or trunk. I need to start a thread like yours and would like to compare some thoughts with you sometime.
Thanks Rick Legg |

I rebuilt the rear drum brakes. The bonded friction surfaces fell off the shoes due to old age. I had the original smooth faced drums turned to remove some light surface rust on the friction surface. However, this was no easy task. Only one older shop in town still performs this service. This is another casuality to this disposable society. I blasted the exterior of them and then shot them in high heat black paint. All of the rear drum parts were on the shelves at the local CarQuest-even the drums if the originals were not salvagable. I drove it around town for a bit. The 455 runs well, and the transmission works fine. The brakes now stop the car well after the rebuild.

I feel lucky! My local auto parts store did my drums.
Looks awesome! Love the progress and originality uncovered! Well documented fun...

On the subject of drums, I foolishly tossed my original unfinned drums in the late 90's;
Is there a source for correct replacement unfinned drums? (even ones which have been relined?) EDIT: I have understood that when buying relined drums, it's a crap-shoot if you get finned or unfinned. Maybe I'm mistaken?

This car desperately needs new rubber before any speeds of 30 or over are attained. The tires I want are the reproduction Firestone Wide Oval F60-15. It will be a couple of months before I will have the spare cabbage for them at $1250 for 4 before mounting and balancing.
