If it is a spun bearing, starting it up just enough to idle into your shop probably isn't going to cause any more damage that what has already happened.

Listen to Jeff.

Fire it up, move it, remove the hood and pull it out from the front of the engine compartment.

Git 'er done.

Good luck.

As soon as i read Steve that you did a prior compression test with 195-205 results an alarm went off in my head ...
To much compression for a pump gas car... I am not sure what kind of gas your running.
But to much compression no oil pressure and a strange noise all add up a pounded out spun rod bearing

dont ruin that block...i :disregarded a piston pin tapping noise and toasted a 1970 455 block... maybe these pics will help you...the block is even worse...i even found a bent pushrod in the street...pull that motor and save it before its too late...

Steve the reason I'm so adamant about not restarting this engine involves a situation that cost a relative a block.Like yours, his car(383 SBC Nova) had spun a bearing and was sitting in the driveway on a 15 deg inclince 25 feet from the garage.Rather than take my truck and some old tires and push him in,we decided to quickly stab the throttle and let the momentum carry it uphill into the building.Only thing we accomplished was venting the oil pan and ruining the block.

just to put a cap on this chapter....

i got the balls to fire it last night. hooked up the old gauge that was reading zero first. i also poured about half a quart of oil over the rockers first. the oil pressure immediately went up to about 55psi and stayed there as long as the rpms were up. (i have no choke so cold start is rough). still had a lot of chatter from the valvetrain on that side (with a definate tapping note as a backbeat).

if i dare to make a diagnostic guess i would say that something is coming apart and the check ball in the pump was blocked.

either way it is not getting fired again. took out the battery and started marking the hood for removal (i will take it off over christmas when i have a few relatives around to help). i decided to move my workbench ect to get better access to the front of the car instead of backing it in. dont want to risk another start.

the curious thing that happened though.....normally i have header evac hooked up on both sides and one extra breather on the passenger, and cold start takes a minute or two to hold idle on its own. when i started the motor cold with the passenger valve cover off it held idle much faster from cold start than it has been (even seemed to run smoother).....
