I may have missed it, is this the digital 6al or the older analog one?

Crazy idea.
Put a recurved GM not aftermarket HEI in it and drive off into the sunset, with a spare module and a screwdriver in the glove box. Even crazier idea. GM points distributor with a modern coil along with a spare set of pre-gapped points and that same screwdriver in the glovebox. Funny how reliable those factory ignition systems actually were, isn’t it.

I need a rev limiter. That’s how I blew up the first one. It runs fine with the RTR that’s in it now but the 6AL is really only for the limiter

So you’re saying that a rev limitation device couldn’t be added to a factory ignition system.
A points distributor that uses the points to trigger an MSD box is a way to do it. This way you can jumper out the MSD box and just run on the points alone should the MSD box crap out. I used to keep those MSD supplied jumper wires in my glovebox.

Aren't the stock points a rev limiter of a sort |

I’m sure to a certain extent.
My 1974 455 would easily go to 6000 during a burnout if I wasn’t being careful, I usually shifted at 5200 and saw 5700 through the lights while bracket racing. I ran a locked points distributor with an ancient MSD6A box, never used a rev limiter and managed to keep the stock cast rods and pistons inside the block for a decade of racing. Later went to a recurved points distributor with vacuum advance when I put it back on the street. For your average 500 or so horsepower hot street Pontiac I’m sure factory points or HEI would handle 99% of anyone’s ignition needs.

They should be able to handle blips to 7500, think they would float before then though.

MSD makes a in cap HEI module with an adjustable rev limiter, works pretty good in my experience, but i dont really need a rev limiter so switched back to a good ol GM module.

Well big shout out to MSD. Less than a week test and turn around. I called today to see if they received it and they have already tested it and are shipping me one back. Diode failed and took out a capacitor. They said 15-25 days just diagnosis time but they’ve only had it since Wednesday so kudos to them.

Just an update to this. The MSD 6AL AND the distributor were bad. I sent the box in for evaluation and the replaced a diode and capacitor. Sent it back and I rechecked all the wire, it was good so I hooked the box up and fired it up. Ran about 15 minutes and died. I got the old screwdriver out and tapped the distributor and box and it fired up again and ran a couple of minutes then that was it. I then noticed that if I tapped on the distributor with the key on the MSD box light flashed. I sent a video of that to Grivera and even he thought it was weird as hell. Ordered a pro billet non ready to run distributor and got it yesterday. Stabbed it in and took off. Runs better than it ever has.
