The young Jim Wangers was a "fierce" competitor; "intense" is the word I probably would have used, whether in racing or in business. The chill, storytelling older Jim Wangers was a very different personality than the Jim Wangers of the 1960's. He had a job to do - sell Pontiacs - and he was going to get it done. K

Pontee Carlo featured with the nitrous IROC Z28. I purchased the Z28 from Jim and enjoyed racing it for years. It was reasonably fast for the time and for what it was (cam, headers, 9” and a bunch of nitrous) Best of 12.20@116. I still check classifieds hoping to locate it again.

My Jim Wangers story...
As a life long Pontiac lover, I've known of Jim and his exploits since I first started reading books and magazine stories about Pontiac as a kid in the '70s. I moved to Michigan from DC/VA in the early '90s, and shortly thereafter started dating a girl (now my wife) who happened to have a passion for cars as well. One time not long after we started dating she mentioned she used to hang out with a street racing crowd in the late '80s (a big thing in Detroit in those days) that Jim Wangers was part of. I said, "wait, what, who?" So she elaborated - it was the Jim Wangers, of course... and she had stories about the Pontee Carlo, some crazy fast Monza, a Super Duty TA, etc. Fast forward a couple years (probably around '97) and we were spending the Christmas holidays with my folks, who were living in San Diego at the time. One night we had nothing going on, and my wife said, "hey, why don't I see if I can get a hold of Jim - he stays out here in the winter". I said something like, "uh huh, sure". But she called some mutual friends, got Jim's number and called him. He was happy to hear from her, and invited us to meet him that night for dinner at a nearby Mexican restaurant, where we spent probably 2 hours talking cars (Pontiacs, and all sorts of other brands/models, too). He then took us out to the warehouse in the industrial park where he kept his cars (Carlsbad area, if I recall), and we spent another few hours talking about his cars, racing, the glory days of Pontiac, etc. An evening I will never forget. RIP Jim-

Burd, I too have one. I put a piece of magnetic tape on the back and stuck to my dash. Easy to remove when I need to hide it from grabbing fingers.

The Petersen Museum will be hosting a Jim Wangers Memorial Musclecar Cruise-in on Saturday, June 10th.
This, from Jim's nephew, Gordon ... "To celebrate the fascinating adventure that was the nearly 97 year journey of Jim Wangers, we will be holding a Celebration of Life on Saturday morning, June 10th, from 9 to 12 AM at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles. There will be a private drive-in car show on the roof of the museum parking structure, so dust off your Pontiacs and of course, other musclecars and high performance cars of interest are very welcome to participate. We will then retire to the indoor private Penthouse at the Museum for a celebration of Jim's life, which will include photographs, memorabilia, videos and selected (hopefully short) speeches and remembrances. Light refreshments will be served. For those of you that live long distances away, we would love for you to attend, but if you can't, we are working on potentially live streaming the event, TBD on that. We will make a firm announcement as soon as we are sure it can work...or not. Thanks to all who wrote to express their condolences. On behalf of the Wangers family, we appreciate your support. In terms of donations as some have asked, your presence and good wishes are all that is required. Dress is casual -- your normal cars and coffee garb is fine. Hope to see you there on the 10th!" |
