My brother let my nephew drive his 71 'Cuda to work when he was 17 or so. My nephew lost control of it, bounced it off a concrete divider and put it in a ditch (my nephew wasn't hurt). The car was trashed, but my brother took it to a skilled unibody/frame guy in Phoenix. He took it down to the firewall, rockers and roof structure, and rebuilt it from there.
I post this just to show that these old cars can be fixed after a sustaining serious damage.

Keep it on point guys. I've been following this thread . At no point did I get the impression that 66' valued the car more than his son. I got that he was quite upset it was crunched and that his son did it.
66sprint6, I feel for ya, also having been through it, albeit with a run of the mill DD instead of a classic. Not anyway near the same, but still ....

I would keep the car, salvage everything good off it, find another one that needs restored and use all the salvage parts I could on it.
the transferred parts will make you feel the flags still flyin from the old car. especially that red interior. love the red interior. no where near comparison on damage, I let all 3 of my sons drive my restored 455 m22 supercase rockcrusher 3.73 67 firebird. one slid on ice into -of all things- a school bus-. fender bender damage thank goodness. I put an msd soft touch rev limiter on the car and mounted it hidden way up under the dash with a 3,000 rpm chip in it. i painted torque seal over the chip and checked it routinely to be sure they nvr found it and knew how to dis-able it! they never did, and i tested it a lot, 3,000 rpm was perfect for safe driving. So I searched the internet last night and I don't know what's happened in the last couple of weeks, but prices have gone way up. Not a lot of selection either. Sure, there's all kinds of cars for sale at 40,000.00 and up, but nothing reasonable. We were looking at cars in the low 20's. I see a battle brewing with the insurance company. They may believe that the 20,000.00 insured value is the maximum. But I was on their website and they do have a process where you can appeal the payout, based upon current conditions. We insured the car to replace it, not just get a payout. So I'm hoping that they will be reasonable.
Here's a couple of cars that we were looking at locally. Again, not much selection and I would hope that the seller would negotiate. Let me know what you think. I have found that after Christmas and New Years, that people can be more flexible when they realize that they need money. I may have to wait awhile. https://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars...tom/1511943816 https://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars...ers/1529150249 |

Prices generally drop come December.. Janurary.. Feburary. Yes.. I do agree that people are getting extremely greedy. Must be all the stimulus money they think is still floating around. That Firebird looks like a really nice car. Tempest looks like a good car. I think the seller is 10k high on the asking price.

Your car gave its life to save your son.
I can't think of a more honorable end for your Poncho. Salvage what you can, and put it on the Tempest, Part Deux. |

Heart-breaking, to say the least! While it is probably too late, I am guessing there are more salvageable parts than not. I'd say you have a good start on restoring another '66' if you can find one. Regardless of how this all shakes out, there will never be another 235176K609001.... unless .....hmmmm.... $20K would buy a resto-frame. A year from now, she could be back on the road.
Anyway, you have my sympathy. I lost a '67' GTO 400HO HT, 4speed to an out-of-control Karmann Ghia while it was parked in front of my buddy's house. I had blown up the 400HO earlier(running a 4.10 gear) and had just put a crate '71' 455HO in it (and a more streetable gear), that came through Buck Baker's shop. Pontiac was supporting his NASCAR Grand Am effort with pieces back then. I still miss that car! ) |

We've let the insurance company know that we are keeping the car. Oh, yeah the wife is thrilled.

If your wife is like mine, when I suffer, she suffers. with and for me. My guess is your wife loves you a great deal more than the car . But, she also knows how much it means to you. Be sure and give her first shotgun privileges when the Temptress gets back on the road.

I like the idea of buying a pro-touring frame for it- could be a really fun project

Update:
I went to go look at the car in the wrecking yard. Mostly to make sure that the car wasn't messed with or stripped of any parts. I was glad to see it was all there. It's a good yard, they even put a stretchy kind of Saran wrap over the windshield and side window to keep water and snow out. Of course the car is a disaster. I was able to snap a few pics but I didn't have much time as they were shuffling smashed vehicles around. They had to bring mine up to the front so that I could see it, as they arent allowing anybody to walk the yard. It was painful to see the guy bring it up with a front-end loader with 20 foot long forks. But what are you gonna do. You can see that the cowl is smashed to nothing. If you can make out in the one pic that shows the bottom fender bolt, the frame literally ripped like paper. The rockers are a lot shorter from the compression and the door pushed back on the jamb and buckled the quarter panel. We're having the car towed to the storage facility and the disection will likely have to wait until spring. |

I know how you feel. I totaled my first 66 GTO in April of 1971. The right front tire blew going around a curve and I rolled it over a snowbank up in Northern NY. I ended up paying 2 years worth of payments for a car I no longer had because the insurance company I had only put liability on it, no comprehensive which was mandatory if you had a car loan. It was $47.96 a month, but I paid my debt. I know it's hard to do but you've got to get on with something else, don't keep thinking about it. Both of you start another project. Your son to help because he was driving, and you to help him and yourself take your minds off it.
As said, buy back the car and salvage all you can out of it. That's all worth money, and can also be used to build up another Tempest, or sells to someone that needs the parts. Don't throw it away like I did. I still kick myself for not stripping all I could out of that GTO, even tho it wasn't a collector car back then.

I have been following along with this thread. Now that you have made the decision to keep the car and will have it in secure storage soon, you can spend the winter making plans for it's rebirth. It's a fair assumption that most of the mechanical parts and pieces will be salvageable and lots of interior goodies too. Seems like a possible solution may be to give a call to someone like Steve Barcak who has 400+ Pontiacs in a dry part of the country with good frames and bodies just waiting for you. With the border closed, getting a usable frame and body to you may be an issue until spring which might work well for your time schedule. I don't know for sure, but with all hose Pontiacs, it seems like a Tempest/Lemans donor car isn't a huge stretch. Good luck with your search for the next version of your car. pontiacheaven.org
