Oklahoma Steve. I showed my wife your car and now she definitely wants me to paint mine. UGH! I like it rough!! If it was painted I would be back to worrying about it all the time. Looks like you are making some horsepower with the supercharger and intake set up. Dyno numbers?? It is a pretty car and yes I did notice the blue motor.

As a side story...A friend of mine brought his 69 300 Deluxe Chevelle SS 396 over the other day so I could change it from manual steering to power. I opened my garage and told him he could take his choice of cars to get home. A 2001 WS6 T/A , a 71 Firebird Formula 400 or the LS1 powered 64 Tempest. He chose the Tempest. When he came back later in the day to pick up the Chevelle he was grinning from ear to ear. He couldn't stop talking about how nice it drove, how cool it was, and how much fun he had. He loved it.

Hey Steve BTW what set up is that for the air intake? Also do you remember what accelerator cable you used to hook up to the throttle body?

Steve...I used a lokar universal type throttle cable?? I can't find the rec. I modified the original bracket on the intake to mount it. Had to cut it to length. The air intake is something I found on ebay. I think there are a lot of similar ones out there.

I took it in to be dyno tuned last Thursday. This was my first sc install so I had a lot of rookie errors that need to be corrected. For example, 6 psi didn't sound like much to me, so I really didn't build my intake setup robust enough. Every time the charger would come up a clamp, tube or sensor would blow out. So we just concentrated on getting it tuned well enough to drive. Since my trans and rear end are new, we thought it would be a good idea to get at least 500 miles on it, get the bugs knocked out and then come back and see what she'll do. I'll keep ya posted.

I can't stress enough that you spend a fair amount of time to make sure you've got good grounds, and plenty of them. If you have any questions there's plenty of Steves around to help a fellow Steve out.

One of the best builds I've seen. Super clean engine compartment for LS swap; The progression of the pics from initial install to super clean is amazing. You need to write up a paper or sticky thread.

Thanks Jim....I have over 1100 miles on the 64 and have enjoyed every mile. We have used the A/C quite a lot as it has been a hot, humid summer here in Michigan. In fact I like it so much I just purchased another LS1/4L60E package and am going to put in the 65 Lemans I bought last fall. Plan on painting the 65 and then, to keep the wife happy, will paint the 64 sometime after that. Looks like I am going to be busy for some time.

Steve I found a 65 4 door Tempest in Bakersfield Craigslist (I was looking for a parts car for the 64) and this one with factory A/C, original paint and original spiral shocks and a 1980 newspaper in the trunk popped up for $1500 running and driving with power brakes! I trailored it 200 miles back home, immediately resealed front and rear glass and cleaned it up and redid the entire front end (MOOG parts only except for the Proform center link). It needs the motor pulled/resealed eventually (leaks too much from the rear main for me) and refurbish the A/C components (seals, etc). S I was sidetracked during the summer plus in Los Banos it gets to hot to work on the cars! The 4 door is currently getting a real cheap factory white paint job in 2 stage paint.
I recently started back up on the 64. Both Radiator hoses are in now, as is the radiator and dual Firebird fan set up. I bought the Lokar cable too for the throttle body and have a similar air intake (3.5 inch) and filter as you now Steve thanks again! Now I just need to install the reworked by Speartech wiring harness and reprogrammed ECM. STILL (yes I haven't even tried to yet out of sheer fright). Also I need to wire relays to the fuel pump and 2 fans. I'm thinking of buying a Painless 30116 kit for the fans (195 degrees on 185 degrees off) I hope that is the right kit. Any pics of those relays and/or advise would help here Steve as I am a OB/GYN MD and Not an electrician! |

Pest, the ecu can control the fans, you can use ordinary relays for that purpose.
