It doesn't seem like an old ad in Hemmings (or Hot Rod/Car Craft) would have the VIN, though.

Just thinking out loud...

Hardly anyone posted VIN's back then in Hemmings cars for sale (in Pontiac section).
I was subscribed to Hemmings, HPP mag, SmokeSignals, and at least 2 MuscleCar mags in that day and time.

This ad only appeared in Hemmings, afaik.
And just 1 time. iirc
It was somewhat common for certain cars to have bloated claims back then also.
Invoices were not available to the masses just yet.
I would have called and gotten VIN if free invoices were an available option, just to have known/found out more about it.

Seems like it was around end of Summer, in 1987 or 1988, when 1-800-Pontiac free PMD invoices became available. If anyone can narrow that range - it would help narrow the timeframe of when that car was listed for sale.

Hemmings was good about keeping chronological order in cars for sale listings.
It wouldn't be too awful tough to search for it if the time zone could be narrowed down a bit more.

I never bought a Hemmings until about 1985.
if that helps a lil bit

About the most you could hope for would be a 25+ year old phone number if the ad can be found.

I hope if anyone can find it - they will lower the bounty to $20 or less - for Lloyd's sake.

Sometimes an old phone number has gotten lucky results.
Many times it has not.

The phone number i had back when i was listing in Hemmings back then, would lead strait to a dead end of unknown strangers. for example

Best wishes on the hunt Lloyd.

Mucho thanks, Todd.

Still hunting around and finding little bitty pieces of info, but that ad could/would be the bomb. Not expecting a VIN by any means, but a name and/or phone number could be HUGE.

Come on Gary, from the time frame that Todd has come up with you'd only need to search the Pontiac (and ONLY the 1970 model year ads) for sale listings in a few dozen old HMNs.

If I were a few hours closer to you I'd darn sure look thru them myself.

Does anyone remember or know fairly certain "about" when the free PMD invoices became available ?

The ad probably gave the color(s) of the car.
Most usually did.
That could be a big plus too if the old ad is found.

IF i were searching old HMN's - i'd also include 69 GTO's - just in case BVZ has erred.
Just to cover all the bases.
But it was listed as factory IV / Auto / AC / Brass Hat - and i'm 98.6 % certain it was a 1970. And located in TX.

If the only documentation on that car was word of mouth from seller to seller - and it couldn't be physically verified by documents back then - it could have been bought to split the engine from the car.

That was really great of Mr Simmonds to get interested in a hunt for the car / history.

More good info there, Todd. Keep 'em coming!

I doubt that it would take me more than 1/2 day to go through those HMNs, if they were in order . . .

Agreed, Todd.

Fred is obviously an avid Pontiac historian and enthusiast! Thanks again, Mr. Simmonds!

Just found out that the Houston Public Library, downtown (read that as makeshift homeless shelter and bathroom) branch supposedly has every issue of HMN from 1981 through current, excepting they are missing 12 issues from March 2003 thru February 2004. Reference ONLY, of course.

Now - the question is - do I drive down there, pay God knows how much to park, join the library, fight off the beggars, take the chance on my DD GMC getting broken into or ripped off . . .

Gotta figure out some way to do it.

John (gto4door), are you up for an adventure?

Alright - just got off of the phone with John, and he's up for this adventure.

We're gonna try and do this within the next week or so.

Todd - MUCHO thanks for the lead!

Take a Yellow cab. John should approve as the cab should have at least 4-doors! Good luck. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Now there's some great advice - thanks, Alvin.

Between the parking @ $2.00 / hour and no chance of getting my junk ripped off, a cab would be a bargain!

Besides all that, if'n we find the ad ourselves I won't owe Gary that $100.00, LOL!

Well, five of us spent all Saturday afternoon at the Houston Public Library with no joy so far. Myself, John, Bob (tabob), Bob's son David and my daughter Caroline.

Found a couple of 1970 RA IV GTOs with air, but neither was advertised as a brass hat car, nor were they in Texas. We went through EVERY single issue from Jan 1982 thru Dec 1990.

If you could check from January 1991 up through say 1995, that would be the bomb. Dunno when we're gonna have the chance to get to the library again . . .

Here are the two 1970 GTO RA IV w/ AC ads we found . . .

It's a good thing you didn't mark out the number on the HO Bird because I'm calling that one. LOL
