i know you hit air at a 2.85 min csa. alittle off the subject, but about maxed out iron heads....i saw a set of iron sbc heads at Meaux's shop that was on a national record holder car. they literally made the ports. welding, re shaping, countless hours involved. they gave up on running them wet and just ran the things dry.

I wonder how that sheetmetal intake would have faired with a pair of carbs instead of one?

Made a different single four top and will try that in the car. Another self imposed limit for this project; I am running the shaker. In other words I am out of wiggle room. The Victor did so well that at this point it will probably be the manifold to run.

Might have a near new sheet intake for sale soon :-)

serious dedication jim, my hat's off to this effort. 127% VE- thats a big part of how a 315cfm port can make 800hp. extensive research to accomplish that!

what is the width at the bulge?
thanks,

Jim neat job! I'm kind of partial to having a Shaker also, especially on the motor. The iron heads stealth is even better!-You need to massage something to at least have the Shaker sitting on the motor, add that hot air hose to hide even more and look stock.

What are the intake port dimensions? Got an extra Victor that is almost that big I think.

Not too bad a "calibrated eyeball" I got!

Larry if you really have read my posts in regards to iron heads I've never said they can't be made to flow good numbers. I've repeated said once you start getting really good numbers though you end up getting larger volumes-like your heads and like Jim's major massaged here, or Lynn's Super Stock major reshaped, massaged, then epoxy filled heads. Then we are right at the same volume as KRE and E heads for the same flow and do NOT still have the increased velocity of a small port that is always the put down of aftermarket heads. It generally takes a larger port to flow the big numbers! Even your heads are larger than what pushes that 4000+lb wagon in the 11s,few if any other ported D ports are as small as Jim Hands for the flow.Let's see 300 hours at even a $20/hr shop rate $6000!

Jim-Got a classmate in Abilene-Larry Ellis, played football at A&M before vet school. You ever run into Mike Cooke in those parts?

I'd love to see what you could do with a '69 Firebird RA IV running in the Factory Appearing Stock Tire racing class.

Yes, and I feel the ports on my #16's are bigger than they need to be for the majority of driving I do. I think they would be better suited to an engine thats used strictly at the track rather than street.
The 3.23 gears are great for street driving but i believe if I were to go to a 3.73, it would better suit the engine combo.
I'll keep the 3.23 for overall street use.

The Buick guys have a stock appearing class. Paper thin iron heads, 12:1,cast iron manifolds you can almost see through hauling a$$! These heads would work for a Pontiac in a similar class. Dave Gessler that posts here some is king of the Buicks that do this.

Larry just sell that SD car and put a 535ci Kaufman head motor in the black car! Then you can lug it all you want with the 3.23s! But I'd get a Jerico in front of them! And you'd still have money for college tutions!

It's Greg Gessler. He did a couple of sets of heads for one of my Buick friends. http://www.gesslerheadporting.com/me...nu-items/ghp06

Brian hit the nail on the head, Jim. I dont think I could have resisted the temptation, LOL! Very good looking engine!

I think a dedicated Sheet metal is probably worth about 15 to 20HP over the Victor. Usually the only guys willing to spend that kind of cash for 20HP are the crazy heads up guys. What did you get?

What would a SM intake like that run? I like the look of it over the Wenzler 2.

Just seems more logical with the fuel having a straighter shot at the runners with two carbs instead of having to make two 90 degree turns with one carb.

Thanks again Pontiac Racers for the compliments, the encouragement and for recognizing the effort that went into this one. I learned many lessons that I can apply to all future engines. We are gaining on the more popular brands in many venues. Kaase and Langer are just two examples that are running out front with a Pontiac. It takes good parts and a dedicated effort. My challenge to each of you is to push a little harder, try some new combinations and report the good and bad.

A pair of carbs would be nice but I far exceeded my performance goals with the Victor. It is after all, a stock crank. The sheet intake with the compromised (flat) top was down about 20 hp and 20 lb-ft torque. The parts are a very delicate balance. I will try to compare the new tapered top (under construction) with the Victor back to back in the car.

The width at the pushrod is 1.33"

It does have an .180" offset lifter and offset rocker so pushrod is very near vertical.

Thanks,
Jim

Awesome work Jim!

what LSA was used on the Cam, how much valve lift?

Default Port molds

Here are the pics of before and after port molds. The ports molds are of opposite holes and are posted to show the amount of material that was removed (+50 ccs from the intakes.)
