I ordered one Monday goatless, it would be great if it showed up today. I'll let you know how they compare to originals, the picture looked good.
The headliner from legendary appears to be a very good product, I thought I'd wait 24 hours before I started glueing, but it's clipped and stretched....DW

Doug,

On the vacuum tee, are you talking about the rear carburetor fitting? Or the plastic fitting?
As to the wiring. If you are going from the idiot light gauges to the Rally gauges, switch the #5 (tan) and #7 (brown) wires around. Plastic connector is labeled 1-12.

You need the one that looks like a peace symbol (478417). No. 4 in the picture.

The mirror looks real good.
Spent some time yesterday making a mold for some parts I didn't think were reproduced, rear window inside corner escutcheons. Found out today they make them. Oh well, I can make them from scratch or repair them now, and they are smooth not pebble grained. I used the same process I've used to repair dash bezels(Dental Stuff). DW

The remote mirror is a suitable replacement.
Had some fun last night, spent the better part of it picking either 35 year old bubble gum or play-doh(bright pink)out of black comfortweave.... The REM carpet fits fine though.

Has anyone installed an AM/FM Stereo radio (Original) in a GTO? I've looked in the manuals I have and I'm confused. My car had the original front speaker, and the seperate amp still in it, but the rest is MIA. Over the last few years I've bought probably 5 different AM/FM radios, two with seperate amps out of probably GP's(chrome buttons) these are the red dot variety. The buttons are easily switched to black to appear correct in a GTO, the problem I'm having is mounting them correctly
The cooling fins are on the passenger side of the radio where all the original(that I have)heater radio support brackets mount.
Were the original radios mounted differently with a flat bracket beneath the radio mounted to the ashtray bracket, or did they use the brackets I have and the cooling fins were on the back of GTO radios?

Hopefully somebody can follow this and help...DW

Sounds like your receivers are from a full-size vehicle. Were there any tags on the side, or a grease marked letter on the front case?

I have three AM/FM non stereo radios, two fullsize, one A body. They look identical(except for buttons) That's why I can't figure why there would be a difference between A body stereo and fullsize stereo radios (except the buttons).
Some of these have labels and markings...DW

Does the buildsheet list which radio was to be installed?
Is it listed by model number or some pick code?
I am in similiar situation;
I have 12 or more radios suitable for resto rebuild, but not sure which one came in specific cars.
Plus, with the paper tags missing on radios, hard to ID once I do know what radio was installed.

Here is the guy that is well know for repair / resto (one anyway):

http://www.wonderbarman.com/codes.html

His site has good info including the model numbers.

The list shows the many options that were available like fader button etc.

How to break down the model number and options listed from his site:

Late in the 1968 model year, Delco Radio adopted a standardised coding for GM-Model-Line radios which made it very simple to identify exactly what a radio is by features, make, and model year.

Let's say the "Service Model Number" is:
02GFM1
1970 Pontiac Grand Prix AM/FM~Stereo

The first digit is the model year of the radio 0=1970. So 8=1968, 9=1969, 0=1970, 1=1971, 2=1972 3=1973, 4=1974, 5=1975 after that i have no litature for info.
The second digit is the car line:
1 = Chevrolet
2 = Pontiac
3 = Oldsmobile
4 = Buick
5 = Cadillac
6 = GMC
The third element is a letter which corresponds to the fisher body style the radio goes in:
A - Midsized: Tempest, Chevelle, Camaro, ChevyII, Acadian, Skylark/GS [GTO not listed by Delco =Tempest, LeMans, GT37, T-37 Pontiac radio]
B - Fullsized model: Bonneville etc.
C - More than full sized: Cadillac Fleetwood.
D - Rear control: Cadillac 75
E - Toronado, Riviera
F - Pony car: Firebird etc.
G - Grand Prix etc.
H - Subcompact: Sunbird etc.
L - Opel
T - Truck
TTC - GMC truck tilt cab
V - Corvette
X - Compact: Nova etc.
Z - Corvair etc.
The next two letters indicate the type of radio:
PB - Push Button AM
FP - AM/FM mono
FM - AM/FM~Stereo
K - Fader Control
MP - FM Multiplex adapter (second part of a two-piece radio)
T - Stereo Tape Player (8-track)
RV - Reverberation Amplifier
FW - AM/FM/Weather band
MW - AM/FM~Stereo/Weather band
In 1970, integrated AM and AM/FM~Stereo/8 tracks became available which added a third letter - T or "AMT" or "FMT" In 1970 there where a lot of AM - 8 track combos sold, FM stations were still a rarity in parts of the country.
Finally there may be a digit (1, 2) on the end which indicates a running change or revision number.
About the ultimate was reached in the late 1970s with the model xxBFTC1 - An AM/FM~Stereo/8 track/CB unit in three pieces - the radio unit which went in the normal dash position, a CB unit which contained the transceiver electronics, and a control head/microphone. About as much as was ever put into a Delco radio.

Here is what little i can provide.
A and F used black buttons. B and G used chrome.
You can paint the chromies -black, or switch donor buttons from an AM (won't have AM FM designations on end buttons) or switch donors from a crapped out AM FM.

The A and F's i have all have the finned piece attached to the back, or incorporated into the rear of the unit.

They also have a studded bracket on driver side to mount to support.

I have a random collection of AM/FM mono and Red Dots.
Most have missing tags or unreadable tags.
But have many variations of Delco logo on them.
Some have logo on right, some on the left, some with cursive font, some with block font, some at top, maybe some at bottom, etc... and some without any Delco logo at all on faceplate area.

The AM radio I have that i thought was the original unit from my 73 TA, works out to be from a 70 Bird according to the chart Harper posted for us.

Radio stuff is taboo, don't go there.
Find one that fits and plays - if you're lucky - and cram it in the hole.

I thought Ransom or GTORIC had all the specifics / characteristics on these crazy things listed in another thread somewhere. But may have been other members. Post a pic of what you have in a new thread and see what comes back.

And/or try searching the 68/69 and 70-72 A body sections - if you've already searched this one.

Goodest Bestest Luck

I haven't seen any radio part number info since I got the Classic GTO Newsletter!

Thanks for the link to wonderbarman.

I rigged up a testing center yesterday, just didn't get past the first one of the bunch yet testing. About half have tags. I've been tearing my place apart looking for a box of ashtrays and brackets I was going to get replated and never did. I know that bracket from that car is going to be slightly different. I'll find them this morning...or its going to be a long day
The stereo am/fm's are attached to a seperate amp which is mounted above the glove box. The attachement is a two foot long bundle of wires that runs across the back of the radio where the cooling fins are on normal radios. That area would be kinda crowded if the fins and the wires were there together. DW

a few AM-FM tidbits:
-the '70 1/2-77 Firebird AM-FM radio's won't fit in the '69-72 GTO/ LeMan's as the bolt-on faceplate is different & can't be swapped with one from an A-body w/o internal work (tuning pot sticks out too far on the F-body).
-there is a Buick A-body AM-FM mono that faceplate & buttons can be swapped... instant '69-72 Pontiac A-body AM-FM mono
-'67 & 68 Pontiac B series multiplexs can be rebuilt into '68 GTO mulitiplexs, just lot of $$$ work. Took quite a while to find source for the correct rear mtd heat sink. Better deal today is to have the rh side panel swapped, & have the unit gutted & upgraded to modern internals.

I've got a few am/fms. One is a multi-plex from a 68. One is from a 69 and
another is from an unknown. I think I bought it off a shelf for $15-25 a couple of years ago.
I'll post pics if I can get to them--if that'll help.

EDIT: Here's some that I have already. One says 7307455.
The one with the small round plug above is from the '68 GTO.
I'm confused on some of the other pics.

It can be done. I took a Fullsize am/fm stereo radio, removed two sides from the radio itself, resoldered a half dozen wires and gizmos, switched buttons and presto 70 A body stereo radio.....good thing this car has air, but I doubt anyone shy of a radio expert would ever be the wiser. I bought some better speakers and retro fit everything, it sounds great, however riceburners with woofers will never here it....I'll be long gone DW
