OK, now it's stupid question time. What exactly is the purpose of the hump?

A flat surface to mount the floor seal and the decorative boot and trim ring.

Default Secured from source believed authoritative?

IMO: Personally I smile when watching this advertising training video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjyJ3...&feature=share that shows how our 1973 Grand Am (and all of the others) was presented and driven when new.

Ours is also a white exterior, red interior with Red-White-Blue “All American” accent striping Grand Am. Even with the poor quality, the video is another reminder of the many neat features incorporated that made it a standout from the rest of the herd of 1973 offerings from Pontiac and all other mfgs of the day. Good to see what our similarly equipped 1373 Grand Am looked like on the S curves, and driving the boulevards as new.
Ours is one of 30,000 made - more or less. That number could be 3,000,000 and it wouldn’t matter. Why? Because it is ours and it is another unique example of Pontiac style and performance.

My answers to questions raised by others regarding the 1973-1977 A-Bodys such as:
• Resale value?
• Others like it?
• Popularity?

Don’t care.

Parts availability?
Do care. Glad to have anyone make parts for them.

Verification of originality source, and As Built documentation all of our Pontiacs used? PHS

NOT from the vague “trickle-down” GM Heritage Center or other internet “Expert” sources.

We don’t worry about how popular our GA is, or it’s value to others. We just consider ourselves fortunate to have purchased a rust free, PHS documented, 1973 Grand Am from the original owners who ordered it when new. Period.

What we have come to know as the 73 Grand Am was originally intended to be the 73 GTO. Several GM photos have surfaced with the GTO badges adorning the rubber nosed A-body. Unfortunately for GTO fans, this did not come to pass. When the 73 models debuted, the GTO name was affixed as an option package on the LeMans. The Grand Am rolled out as it's own model, with a Grand Prix interior, and a handling package bettered domestically by only the Corvette and the Firebird/Camaro. Deep bucket seats with lumbar supports, as well as the more refined Grand Prix dash and thick padded steering wheel made the Grand Am a driver's kind of car. The 15 inch radial tires and huge front and rear anti-sway bars added to the driving experience. The availability of the 455 engine with four barrel carburetor and dual exhaust made for a very competent package.

---147 Grand Ams were built for '73 with a four speed manual transmission. The four speed was available only with the 400 motor.
Those wanting 455 power were limited to the Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission.
There were a number of 4 door 4-speeds produced, but the Grand Am Registry has yet to come across one. http://www.classicalpontiac.com/ga/index.html
Obvious to most here - there have been several 4-door 4-speeds shown on this section of PY and for sale on other websites. Folklore has the 4-door sedan production as low as 20 Grand Am vehicles.

So…once again we come back full circle to the question that still HAS NOT been answered: What is the real Documented 1973 4-speed production – Coupe and Sedan?
