I've been getting called out for that one left and right. The funny thing is I was going to edit it out and thought nah, nobody will catch that one. Woops. I've got no defense except to say I am building two 1968 F-bodies at the same time one Camaro and one Firebird I was bound to screw up. Thanks for keeping me on my toes.

Do you buff the jambs? Have you ever used the 3M dry sand paper that has a velcro attachment to the backing pad and a DA is used?

I was given a backing pad and about 5 disc of 3000 grit and was told I could do the whole car with one or two discs but never tried it.

Default 69 Blown Big Block Camaro back halved

I did a quick repair on a 69 Camaro, had to replace the tail light panel. I got to use SEM Copperweld weld-thru primer and I thought I'd share the video. The primer seemed to work real well I've been warned about the zinc enriched stuff but the copper enriched was nice. I'm sure the brand doesn't matter too much but I've used other SEM products in the past with good success so I gave their's a try first.

Quick update as Chuy's Pontiac leaves the shop for a little prep work before the motor and trans. install.

Update as Travis puts a beautiful finish on a black Thunderbird.

Weld-thru Primer Video

We are a little all over the place on this one but I thought the primer knowledge was a good add to the thread and then to see the Firebird final'd out before the parts start going on, Chuy will hopefully post some pics or at least take some and email them to me so I can post them.

Until the next time.

Thank you very much for these videos.
Question for you. When using your air file and even just the board, I noticed you didn't put down a guide coat to see when your done.

Any reason for not using the guide coat?

I really like using 3M's charcoal dry guide coat when I'm body working an area that is giving me a little trouble or perhaps in the episode you're referring to, between the 80 air file and 150 long board to make sure all of the 80 scratches are sanded out. Thanks for asking my videos are obviously unscripted and I often don't get to pointing out as many aspects to building these cars as I'd like. Feel free to keep me on my toes I often learn from the comments.

Default Butt welding sheet metal.

Butt welding sheet metal is one of my favorite tasks. It can get complicated as there are many undesirable side effects that can arise. I try to remind myself that the metal is not going to do what I want but that I have to curtail my work to allow for what the metal will naturally want to do. I am somewhat sophomoric in skill level at butt welding sheet metal but it is one of those things where one that has the tools and knowledge to perform the task gets better with everyone that gets done. I'm sure I've done videos and will again do videos on butt welding sheet metal none however, come to mind at this time.

Thanks for your response regarding the guide coat.

Right now Im outside in the garage trying to finish the interior (again) to paint with Acrylic Lacquer. First time I dont think I had the paint coming out atomized enough.

So Im sanding it down again (600 wet). On some of the the edges (qtr window)I go thru to the metal. Is there a technique I can use so this doesnt happen?

In other words when you get down to 600 grit, what do you do to avoid sanding thru on the edges??

Also, if you have ever shot DDL 9700 (single stage black lacquer reduced 1:1) with an HVLP gun is a 1.4 tip ok?

What settings do you shoot it at? (I was 40 psi at the regulator which is attached to the gun and when I pull the trigger it goes down to 28psi)

I saw your 1966 GTO on your website and it looks sweet!!
Thanks,
Don

Default Updates on the FireBird.

It came back Monday afternoon and we have been busy because this thing has to be on a boat for Germany Dec. 1st. The upholsterer would like three weeks with The Firebird and that gives us a week to install the driveline, harness, finish the body, and whatever to make it work. Sounds like a show on Discovery or TLC, in the real world not really possible. I'll try anything.

Some pics.

The first installation video live without a net.

Thanks for all the support and comments I hope you like the progress of the build.

It's Friday and I'm hurting, I couldn't tell you how far through the build we are all I can say is we are not done. I've got to go to a car show tomorrow(which always ends up being more work than fun) and we plan on hitting the car again Sunday all day. Like always it's just a series of small hurtles we hit one after another trying not to look at the hole picture so as not to overwhelm us. Chuy is starting to show signs of sterss, Don't worry buddy, well worry but we will get it done...we have no choice.

Default Part 2 of the Build

We are continuing on with the build although we have missed our one week deadline ( I figured so much but wanted it to happen anyway). More fuel, exhaust, wiring, power, steering...

Thanks for sharing in our build.
