I got the short block together now I got to get the heads to
the machine shop to get them done. I started working on the tri power tonight and hope to have that done soon too. I've got to make some money to get the heads done. Should be next week. Here's some more pics of the motor and the box that the Rings came in. NOS rings from back in the 50's I think. GT. |

Dropped the heads off at the machine shop today.
Might take a week to get them back. Going to order the wheel cylinders and flexable brake lines from Rock Auto tonight. Hope to be putting the motor back together next weekend. Maybe driving this thing in a couple weeks. I'm getting excited about driving this thing. GT. |

Nice find I always liked the 57 Pontiacs better the Chevys. Don't understand why the chevys ended up so popular. I better go check Craig's List right now. Enjoying the thread, Thanks, Les

Well I forgot I've got to rebuild the fuel pump and pull the gas tank to clean it.
So it might be 3-weeks instead, No matter I'm going to keep working on it till I get it going running driving. I'll get the motor fired up on the test stand first. That'll be pretty exciting and keep me real motivated on the rest. GT. |

But, thankfully, Bunkie, changed all that, getting the ball rolling starting in 57...for Pontiac Corporate Pontiac had their thumbs in their asses, didn't even promote their new V8 in 55 (or so I've read...), and wondered why their "new" cars in 55 didn't take off...

What do you guy's think about this cam, Supposed to be a 068 replica sort of.
I'm not sure of it in the 347, Maybe a little too much? GT. |

I ran original '068' cams in a couple of nearly-stock '58/'59 engines, on the street, and was happy with them. That was a long time ago- I used the Pontiac anti-pump-up lifters. Jahns domed pistons, about 13:1, was good for 6,300 RPM. 4,200 pound wagon was a pig off the line, but ran 14.4 second quarter-mile, 94 MPH.

I think it will be just fine, smooth , broad power band and great match to the stock compression ratio. They are 212/225 @050 115 LSA I believe. The low first gearing of a 57 Pont automatic should more than compensate for any weak off idle TQ if that is a worry. Glad you got quiet stock lifters, I would hate a ticky non loping engine. I think new style Stainless Steel valves help on the Unlead fuel thing. I have NEVER put hardened seats in my old Pontiacs and never had a problem except in my feelings for them being added when I tore down some 670's that had that done and it looked terrible and messed up the flow of a stock head with all the mismatches and difficult to blend it since the seats are so freaking hard compared to the cast iron. The 068 compares to what was used in the Trophy 425-A 389 Tri Powers around 60-61 I believe

The main reason I put the harden seats in was for rust in the exhaust seats was so
bad that there wasn't much choice a couple of the intake seats had us wondering but they came out ok. My machinist did a pretty nice job of blending. I'll go in and do some final blending as I want to do a little bowl cleanup anyway. And I might open up the chambers a little to as to lower compression a bit. The cam specs are 112 LSA 212+224@50 on Dur. The lift with 1.5 rockers are .450's+460's with seat pressure of 100-115. It's a little more lift then I wanted but the rest of the numbers seem alright. The cam is suppose to make good low end, good milage and idle smooth. I think it will be alright. And thanks for all the info and knowledge. GT. |

Cool, as long as it gets blended. Not too many options with rust although I have dealt with it on Pontiac intake seats by going to a 45 degree valve on a 2.11 application with porting and on 389 heads with 1.88 intakes a set of 45 degree SBC 1.94 S/S w stock size 1.6 exhaust but also swapped to SBC S/S version works nicely and a lot of material comes out of the throat to blend it in and porting.

I'm thinking about opening up the combustion chamber some to lower
the compression to maybe 9:25:1 to 9:50:1 so I won't have to run premium fuel al the time cause I plan on this being my daily driver. I've got to check everything first to see where it's at for comp. Then again theres not a hole lot of differents between reguler and priemium fuel so I might just leave it alone. yea-no yea-no yea-no yea-no............ Any suggestions you guy's. GT. |
