I was going to post about the e-bay auction and see it is already here. There was about 25 bids and I am sure many that wanted these mouldings but didnt bother to bid as I didn't knowing the price would be outragous. I think this auction shows how bad these wheel mouldings are wanted. I think it is time for 73-77 A body parts.

How about the emblem for the 1964 GTO Sport Steering Wheel? All of the houses stopped carrying this about the same time, so I'm assumming that there was one producer who ran out of them and is no longer making them.

Maybe this time they can do a better job on the emblem for the sport wheel. It is quite different than the original.

Chris,

Could you perhaps explain the process of reproducing sheet metal and why there is such poor quality with so much of it especially quarter panels and fenders? I am in the mfg. business with some knowledge of tooling and die work and cannot understand why it's so difficult to accurately reproduce a stamped part.

The technology and material is much better than it used to be 30+ yrs ago. In many cases, there are even original drawings available. Could this be the result of an American company outsourcing the actual work to an Asian company and a lack of quality control? One would think that after 20+ yrs of repro sheet metal for Pontiacs, these companies would learn how to do it right the first time. Seems everytime I talk with someone who has used repro sheet metal, they describe the countless hours in labor required to 'massage' the panel or trim it to make it fit if it fits at all.

I realize PY is not directly to blame for all stamped parts they advertise; I'm just curious as to how there can be such poor quality. Seems to me that people would be more willing to pay for something IF it was better quality. I also realize the demand is always a factor but I can't see how this changes the design and mfg. process or, is it simply about $$$ and the American Company seeks out the cheapest shops in Asia to do the work.

Thanks in advance for the reply !

I don't think it is the Taiwan companies that do poor work. I think it is what the American company that outsources it is willing to accept/spend $$ up front to get a good product as opposed to a "close enough" product.

I've seen some real nice replacement sheetmetal, an also seen some real junk.

I would also suspect that if a NOS part is available for use as a prototype so the manufacturer has a goal to work to.

I see we have complete repro door shells now for '66-67 GTOs (hardtop only of course). Why don't we have just the door skins available too??? I need some for my sedan!

I can't start a new discussion in this forum so I will post what I would like to see reproduced correctly here. I would like to see the correct wood grain dash inlay for 1970 GTO's. The correct thickness and pattern and shade. I think all of us would be willing to pay a little more for something correct.

How about new head bolts for 69 and 70 Ram Air IV engines with the correct markings and studs for the neg battery cable and pre heater shroud. These will work on 71-72 455 HO and SD 455 engines as well.

Chris,
Until repro 70 GTO front fenders become available how about a repair panel for the front fender/side marker light area? A panel that goes from the body line down & from the wheel opening to the front bumper could be useful to repair rusted or damaged fenders. One could also rework a Lemans fender from the 70 - 72 era for the much needed Goats!

Please reproduce most or any of the HURST PERFORMANCE items which are known to deterorate or get lost over time. I can not find much HURST parts (except shifter items) no where.

73-77 A-body wheel opening moldings. The demand for these items are VERY high.
