Also if you look at the cylinder heads their was some holes that have been plugged .
Also the block number stamped on the pad is 490132 but the block is stamped 212 not the usual 132 that we are used to seeing. Sent from my SM-G973F using Tapatalk |

Thanks for all the pics!
That intake with the EGR setup made in 1971 is cool. They knew back then they would need the EGR setup. Edit: This was in a 1973 GA so needed the EGR manifold.

Thanks for sharing the story on this! This has to be one of the coolest finds in a long time. I'm really surprised that the engine survived being that it was cast so early before the actual production of SD's began

The article above is from the October 1972 issue of Motor Trend magazine. Michael's Super Duty Trans Am (magazine test car) wasn't built until December 1972. The recently-discovered Super Duty Grand Am was built in mid-September 1972. While at first it may seem plausible, publishing lead times were at least 2 months out back then, so it's impossible that the recently-discovered Grand Am was that shown in the Motor Trend article. Furthermore, I can confirm that the images above were taken at Pontiac's 1972 Long Lead Press Preview held at GM's Milford Proving Ground in late-June 1972. The photos still exist in Motor Trend's photo archive and possess a development date of July 1972. Both of these cars along with a number of other Super Duty 455-powered engineering mules were available for magazine writers to test drive. It was at this same event that High Performance Cars magazine awarded the 1973 Super Duty GTO is Car Of The Year award. |

I know a guy who had one just like that. He was from Florida (Sarasota) and showed it at Springfield IL POCI show years ago. He sold it a few years ago, not sure where it went.

Thanks for that, Mike.
I always thought how great it would have been if the heads had the same cc's as the RA IV head chambers. Pontiac always hated the power loss from the restrictive FB exhaust also. It killed over 100 HP.

Nice. Thanks HFR and Mike.
I don't think I have ever seen this and I have questions: Tuned Headers. From...? M-7 cam. Not sure I have heard of this before. Specs? Guesses? Holly, eh? Specs? [850+ cfm so no QJ ??] I'm not sure but carb in picture looks odd for a production SD carb. Yes / No ? Maybe I just forgot this stuff. SDD |

I think the cam was a General Kinetic? I think the duration was 300/310?
The headers were JR 2 1/8" headers. The Holley was a vacuum secondary 850. The Rat Killer test was 11.84 cr using the RA IV head I think. (basically like SD head except 72 cc chambers compared to the 114) The recommendation was to improve the Firebird exhaust.
