There is a guy out here in AZ that says he has a car that he bought in 81 and it had the ram air pans when he bought it. I know somebody could have added them but he thought it was all original back then. It changed hands several times since then and now he owns it again. I'm going to buy some parts from him and hope to see the car later this week, is there any tell tail signs a car originally had RA other then the obvious hood pans, he did say the original motor was gone when he got it, it had a 428 in it. Thanks

No way to know without PHS.
Unless it was a matching # engine car with known history.

All R/A had 3.90 Posi , but those can come and go for any reason.
And 3.90 was an option with other engines too.

If he really thinks it might be genuine, and 1 of 12, should be worthwhile for him to send some money to PHS. Especially if its built May or later. Jim Mino had good luck buying Bronze cars.

OK I went and looked at the 68 400 car here are a few pics. The guy painted the upper pan blue (LOL) I don't know why, can anybody tell by looking at the pic if it looks like an original pan?

He is not sure what the rear end is other then it is a posi.

Vin is 223678U149XXX

The hood scoops are cut out

Some nice options PS, PDB, PW, P. Top, 8 Track, Sport wheel, Space Saver Spare, Custom Int

Does the VIN coincide with RA production dates?

Since you have the VIN, there is nothing stopping you from getting PHS docs on it, if you are interested in possibly buying, knowledge is everything!

It could easily be a RamAir 1 Car by the VIN.
I have 2 on file with VIN's from plant U that are a good bit earlier.
Not saying it is a Ram1 - just that it "could" be.

Unfortunately, on all the Ram2 Birds i have on file, they blocked out every digit after the plant code digit on them.

If Ram2 is all you will settle for, you should have gotten the build date from the trim tag.
Would need to be Mid May or later to have chance of qualifying for Ram2.

If it were a 3.90 he would know it after driving one time at highway speeds.
Not to say someone would not have changed it for a friendlier gear tho.

400 HO Auto came with 3.23 gear as standard.

Based on the vin 149xxx wouldn't this have been produced approx in the middle of the production year? 49000 out of 110000 produced? so what month would this have been made? Jan?

I forgot to get trim info

So it looks like they made about 10,000 a month, so end of Jan would be approx. 141xxx, so it looks like closer to end of Feb for this one. So I guess RA 2 would be out.

149xxx probably wouldn't stretch up to Mid-May, i agree.

If the car traded a couple few times since early 90's seems like someone would have PHS'd it at least once to be sure it was even a real 400 Bird.
Just for knowing - if any decent money were involved.
Maybe it always sold at a really fair price where it didnt even matter.

Looks like a nice car and i like the color.
I almost got serious about the 400HO / Ram1 cloned 4spd Bronze Vert back in the mid 80's here in NC. It was really sharp and in great shape.

Just saw Leo Glasbrenner (sp?) won at Las Vegas a couple weeks ago.
Said he runs RA II heads.
Was his car originally a RA II (or I) car?

looking at the IP it looks to be an early car not a RAII
IF that wasnt changed

Default another run of the mill RAI car for your records

Another contribution. WI engine long gone still retains original trans and rear. It would be awsome to see a registry of these great cars including the inferior RAI!

That car looks bad ass just the way it sits - with the chalky paint & all!

Thanks for sharing with us 9manchu .

Yours is the earliest 68 Ram1 car i have on file (Bird or Goat).

RA1John has said he has a fair amount of data on mostly I's and some II's
With that and what we've gathered on PY it might be about time to try and do a registry if anyone has server space to donate.

They are single but on both sides the wire has been cut and spliced. Are you trying to pin down the switch from two to one or ???

Special order paint - Solar Red. Apparently documents say, "ship one extra quart of paint with the car" or something like that.

Fully documented by PHS, and he also has a build sheet and a chassis sheet (not familiar with these, but said it's dated 6 June 1968). He's out of town for a few weeks, but said he could send copies of the documents when he returns.

Apparently Jim Mattison has looked at his car; must have caught his attention when Mike ordered the PHS documents.

Thought I would resurrect this thread with a picture of car #12, all lettered up and ready to race!

http://s102.photobucket.com/albums/m...psa69838b1.jpg

Car's owner (Mike R) and I have been looking for as-raced pictures of the car for a few years now; Mike was recently able to track down someone who used to work on the car, and this fella still had a few pictures. Guy that Mike spoke with said the car was delivered without a door mirror or windshield wipers and windshield wiper motor...
