On the original cam gear... yes, they were nylon originally. Better check it out to be safe. Here's what mine looked like at 57K...

Grant, thanks for the info....I thought so, my past experience with Chevys that was one of the first things I always did. The front crank seal is leaking anyway, and I would feel better knowing for sure.
