When you put a rack on a first gen f-body, you put it in front of the spindals, you swap the steering arm from side to side to do this. You then need to put a bar or something up there to mount the thing. If lil baby maker puts a bar in front of the motor, he will have full access to the oil pan and can put a better pan in the car. Better pan = more power and he deffinately needs some of that.

John,
Do you have any pictures of how you mounted your Rack and the crash bar you are talking about. Thanks Robert

There are plenty pictures of my car on the rear bumper out there. It is quite visible in them. I have been in Florida for the last few weeks "working" so I can't really forward anything.

Thanks John, I will find a pic of it up on the bumper and check out your Rack. I want to convert my car to a rack and doing research before I start.

Jack, I will be cutting my cross member next year this time. I want easier access with the next motor and bigger headers. I was going to cut the back of the cross member, near the frame rail, and the top of the cross member for the headers. I did not think I would have to cut the whole cross member out to get the 2 1/4" headers in. What am I missing or what other reason are you taking the cross member out?

You install a very strong chrome moly tube cross-member/ "Crash Bar" (which you said yourself takes all of the impact) that you also use to mount the rack for the steering. Sounds to me that Jack would need to do EXACTLY the same deal for your example to hold water. Otherwise it is apples to oranges. If you are not going to change to a Rack/ "Crash Bar" , Jack, install the the removable piece on the existing frame with the mid mount, the front mount, and the "J-bars". Tom Vaught

Here is how I did mine before putting the rack in. Like John, I have a chromemoly tube in the front to mount the rack. For the minimal weight savings it gives me piece of mind having that center in there. I will say though, everytime I have had to remove it over the years, there is no binding when removing the bolts.

Any rack mount that is also acting like a "crash bar" will keep the frame rails in position when used with a front and mid plate. Does Diaper Boy have a rack or crash bar presently in his car or just conventional steering box? You need to look at the whole picture vs one part. I would say that if Jack has or puts a rack/ crashbar into his frame system he will be ok, without the rack/ crash bar I would install the removable support like Dave P did, expecially with normal steering. My block is not a stress point. The motor and mid plate could possible be defined as one with the torsional load of the crash bar hitting the ground but it is highly unlikely. The 2 plates basically prevent a bending moment if the moly pipe/crash bar fail. The only load the block would see would be the efects of gravity on the 5 bolts in the trans and the 4 bolts in the engine plate. Pure shear. But since the engine can't move (in theory), again there is no load on the engine. Now if the engine pan or trans pan smacked the ground, all bets are off.

Your crash bar must be pretty beat up with all of the bumper rides you seem to take. What did it cost you to fix the chassis the last time you dropped it?? Tom Vaught

Last time I dropped it was 2008. It has cost on average of 10k each time it has happened.
