Ramairbird ...I have a BARFO for Cliff R:
Cliff, my 469 too runs cooler than the others. Slug popped about .050 to .010. 48heads on a 60+455 on pump gas was something to brag about..I inspected the pecked piston tops...OK with that. Problem was the warped slugs with binding pins that got me. Since compression tests always yielded 270+PSI on 3 bumps, my suspicionis the slugs warped in the presence of steamed antifreeze from the last 3miles of highway driving without the oil pump ing. Suffice to state: We can run our engines cool and make relaible power, and get good mileage, and good plug burn, and remove the Primary Q-Jet choke. Aside from all the little things to keep the engine running cool, I put merit to using a Y-pipe in the upper Radiator hose, no thermostat, no log thermostat housing. Further, I put merit into cutting-back the sparkplug ground lug to half-length, and regapping for .035 .040" This go around I'm using the GM 3-row radiator from the 72 LeMans. 48heads, and really dished-out Ross slugs set for zero deck, to yield 8.3:1 I'm in deep yogurt because the cam is 248/252 @ .050....this pig is gonna stumble, spit, and load-up below 3000RPM. Gotta put the huffer to it just to idle. Maybe the formula is lost, it runs hot, pings, and nets low 13's... Grandville455 no by all means if you are in the process of rebuilding the engine then take the time to pay attention to deck height. As you can see there are benefits to running proper piston crown to quench pad clearances on pump-gas street engines as you will lower the octane requirement relative to an improperly set up engine. I think it is well worth paying a shop $100 to deck & true the block. For Pontiacs at least this should be on the list of "must dos" for any rebuild, IMHO.

What is a good, affordable piston for the 400 (.030). Is a trw better than a Keith Black? What are you guys using...I think these 8-relief "el-cheapos" are outta here!

On the subject of zero deck...If you are using a fel-pro 8518 the compressed thickness is like .042 or .046 or something like that. Why would it hurt to be out of the cylinder several thou. as long as no piston to valve interference occurred? In other words zero deck is still .04? below the cylinder head. Right?????

Okay, so why is .010, .015, or even .030 down in the hole so bad? Where is the line at which point you have quench and at which point do you have enough quench and closer tolerances between the piston and head are not needed or will not yield a benefit?

I have KB's in my 462. They stick 10 to 13 thou. OUT of the hole. I run a set of 5c's that have all the sharp edges ground back nice and smooth. Car will run between 195 to 205 with no pinging at all. I have my timing set at 32 deg.
My Rig's a little old, but that don't mean she's slow.

I measured used 8518 gaskets (the ones in the KS2616 set) at right around .042" on average. This is what I found at least.
