WOW ! All these years I've saved those pictures, thinking I had a piece of history.
Lloyd, glad we found the truth before you spent the money. Even though I was wrong, I'm glad we all know the truth now. And how about the guy who forged these stickers? People like that should be driving a Yugo not a GTO.

I'm glad that mystery was solved by JM with the help of NJSTEVE.

At least we all got to see your "back in the day" mullet hair style. I have a picture of me (with mullet hair) and girlfriend standing next to my '72 GTO taken back in the day too, but I don't want to post that pic.

No problem at all, Bill. We've ALL been fooled at one time or another. At least you and Steve had the full VIN so that this particular "urban myth GTO" could be put to bed for once and for all.

By the way, my good friend gto4door (John) called me about this thread and spoke VERY highly of you . . . he met you at a national convention some time back.

Yes I remember meeting John at MCACN show in 2010. He politely listened to me ramble on about my car for quite a while.

I almost did a double take on the picture and wondered when I posed for that snapshot? Eerie.

Default Late Production Window Stickers

Let me start by saying that I'm not disputing Jim's PHS invoice. This is only to show that there was a change in the sticker design for the end of the production run. When I showed that convert to Bob Adams of Bert Adams Pontiac back then he sent me this shipping record. It's for a 1972 LeMans built in May. I know it's hard to read (blue ink on yellow tissue paper), but is easy to see the layout matches the window sticker I put up yesterday. And I think that 455 survivor at last weeks convention also had that style and may have been a 2 page too. I asked Steve to put up a better copy of this.

Hmmm . . .

Your post got me to digging around in my files, Bill, and lo and behold here's a small, fuzzy photo of a '72 LeMans GT window sticker, in red.

Yes, very nice detective work there. So the form could be considered correct for an A-body, but since the F-Bodies never made it past April of 1972 when the UAW strike occurred, you won't find a 72 Firebird sticker like that.

Here's the bigger photo (I adjusted the contrast so you can see it better)

BTW, I looked at the original photo and the guy never actually says it's a 72 GTO convertible, his sign says 1972 Lemans Sport Convertible with the GTO option. So is that the correct way to describe the car?

Yes it is. That's the way I list mine with POCI. Remember they were trying to fool the insurance companys. Also, great job on the shipping invoice, it's easier to read then my original.

My '72 lemans original window sticker looks like the ones posted above. I think it's an april or may build car.
